I am heading to the states at the end of the week, it looks like I am being sent to Vegas for a few nights then to New York.

Does anyone have any tips on what things are worth buying over there and any shops that are good value?

Paul Frank, Quicksilver and Abercrombie and Fitch are our usual haunts in Vegas.
We're doing the same trip but New York for 4 days and then 10 in Vegas at the start of November.
Apparently in Vegas the out of town malls are cheaper.

When you go to vegas, try the paradise outlet mall, or take the trek out to the one in Primm...

If you end up in Macy's, take your passport up to the first mezzanine floor and you'll get 11% (iirc) off whatever you buy.

Depends on what sort of stuff you like really, if you're into your designer stuff then Barneys, Bloomingdales and Saks are pretty good, Macy's has highstreet designer, rocawear / Sean John etc. Abercrombie on Fifth is awesome, there's also a Sean John store up near 37th on 5th.

If you want to try to look for a bargain, century 21 nr Ground Zero can be good. It's a bit like TK Maxx though in that sometimes you'll find a gem in amongst all the junk so can be hit and miss. We bought our boys some Ralph Lauren Polo shirts, (tshirt ones) for $7 each.

About an hour upstate there's a place called Woodbury Common which is an outlet village, has CK, Timberland, Barneys, D&G, Saks etc.. so that's worth checking out.

NY is just awesome :) Have fun

Wow JB, you know all about shopping, lol.

Since the Paul Frank shop closed in London, i have to rely on our trips to the US to stock up on my Monkey T-shirts.

I've never been to NY so I can't wait!

If buying electricals then bin the box or post the box to yourself to avoid any charges coming back. Clothes are the best savings though.

Watch out for sales tax though. It's around 7% in Las Vegas, not sure what it is in NY.

Cheapest iPad is US$499 + sales tax.

Hop on a bus to the outlet malls north and south although the one near fremont street is cheaper and I think more there!
There is also a store just down from Riviera hotel called Ross Dress for Less and it is their version of TK Maxx and so cheap.
I got Guess handbags for $45 and also gold ring for $25 and earrings for $9! Designer sunglasses from $6!
Clothes and shoes really cheap in there although you have to really search through the rails but it is worth it. Have fun it is my fave place............. Want me to carry bags?

I am getting very excited about the trip and starting to wonder if my £400 will go far enough for my 8 nights over there :) - I am starting to think it won't!

thank you very much for pointing this out! i have had a bit of a read and it appears that tax isn't always displayed on the prices

i am also going to have to get my head around tipping for everything (im from a country that vehemently opposes tipping and gratuaties). i have just read that workers get very low pay and rely on the tips to survive

Hmmmm.......NO, mayve triple that budget.

Food is relatively cheap so even with tips of min 20% you'll still eat out like a king in both NYC and Vegas

NYC and NJ abolished sales tax on clothing under $110, single items not per purchase so you'll be fine their. The malls in Queens and Brooklyn are a lot cheaper than most areas if you';re happy to take a train. Or even take a trip across to NJ.

Have fun X)
