Hey guys,

I am seriously considering buying the iPad. I have only ever bought one apple product - the original ipod mini, and I won the second last iPod Nano as well.

Anyway, that's irrelevent. I was wondering whether you'se would recommend the iPad. I have a desktop and computer but think the iPad would be handy just to have in the living room, because I like to regularly check forums and emails, and just catch up on the news. I wouldn't be looking to replace a laptop.

If I do go for an iPad, I would probably go for the cheapest option at the moment - the 16GB iPad with Wifi.

So, any thoughts? I have read that it is a waste of money, and also that it is really good. HELP.

P.s. I am trying to save up for it at the moment, and if I decide not to go for it, I guess I have money nonetheless.

I think you will be more than happy with it for the purposes you list. You may even consider an ipad1 - less money and will do the same thing.

Yh, but I already have a laptop, a netbook is just a small laptop.
At least with the ipad, I don't have to wait 2 minutes for it to start up, its almost instant.

put the laptop on standby then.

why do you want it so fast there are 24 hours in a day

question should be, should I pay £300 plus for an ipad
no

I know I put it on hibernate but I guess I am just lazy. I have to open up the screen, push the button and wait for it to load and click on the browser and put it in my laps.

With the ipad, I just pick it up and use it. lol

I would say, if you don't have an iPhone (which you don't) the iPad is a superb purchase, because it gives you the iPhone OS, all on a bigger screen which when you hold is like holding a block of gold in your hands, it amazes you.

If you do own an iPhone, then the iPad can become a little bit of a disappointment because you realise the phone can do pretty much all the iPad can do!

I see what ur saying. Nobody in the house has an iphone. I know the iPad is not supposed to be a "necessity" as such, like a proper computer which is essential for life now a days. But it is just a gimick or cool gadget, but that doesn't mean I don't want it.

lol, £9

The ipad2 seems to be out of stock everywhere atm I have noticed. It will be 3-4 months before I can afford it anyway, but is this just due to huge demand?

don't buy anything with the eaten apple icon

Macbook Air, as I can hook up the iPad 2 with the wireless keyboard and using DocsTogo app to use all the Office stuff I need.

Reading magazine on the iPad 2 is amazing also. Especially The Times app, it is free

One thing I notice with the iPad, the iPad 1 gives me eyestrains after 1 hour of reading on the screen (My eyes are sensitive to LED backlight), but with the iPad 2, for some reasons I don't have that issue anymore

May be depends on what you use it for so different battery life..but in my experience, iPad 2 battery is better

way ive always looked at it, laptops are for production and tablets are for consumption.. i know this a big generalisation but if you want to browse and do they basics fast while having sum fun im sure the ipad will be ace!

if you wanna produce documents and work then having an ipad as your main port of call would be a terrible decision,

there more of a luxury item, i know this doesnt really answer your question but i suppose if you have spare money theres nothing to worry about! but im pretty frugal and my laptop does everything i want! except angry birds..

I have found that small things like brightness can make a huge difference to battery life on laptops, and its probably the same for the ipads

sorry jb is jailbreak so basically free apps and being able to customise the operating system (its currently not available for ipad 2 just yet but hopefully soon!) Battery life is awesome, charged it up for a few hours on release day didnt need to charge it for a week. Ive got a 32gb wifi perfect for my needs and got enough space if I want to put on any media file or more songs

I would never have got rid of a Macbook Air for an iPad, but I will say, they are superb. Buy it, you will not regret it. And with regards to stocks, try to visit your local apple store first, then I would just order it online, people seem to be getting it a bit quicker than the online stated dates I think.

The MBAir is getting overheat really quick due to its smart and small design, the fan (there is only 1 fan) is small and always runs at full speed if you started watching movies/ YouTube on it. It was designed for office people who travels often and just typing words/excel etc. May be you are right in term of Macbook Pro or other PC laptop alternative upwards for the production bits.

I have other Macs at home to do the Office works, and then sync with my iPad, I can easily access, modify on the go without any trouble. Therefore it is not practically useful to have Macbook Air just for the benefits of the built in keyboard, makes it an expensive typing/ web browsing design

If you have tried the Office apps on iPad with the Apple wireless keyboard, you will see that there is nothing different between using an iPad and a laptop (maybe netbook in this case). Perhaps the iPad 1 is not as good as people think because it lacks of essential functionalities but the iPad 2 is simply amazing, especially the front and back camera, and the iMovie apps.

And also OP: This iPad 2 will hold the resale value very very good, in 5-6 months time, if you decided to sell, you wouldn't loose much money compare buying Windows related products.

I do really recommend OP to get an iPad 2, not because of Apple/ Windows arguments here, but because the mobility/ usefulness of it

I have played the the ipad tablet PC a few times as my mate tried to convince me it's the bees knees. I reckon it just felt like another useless gimmick.

I already have my android phone which let's me check emails on the go and a few websites discreetly when I have the time and when I come home I have my powerful PC connected to my TV which is a far superior experience than you will ever have with a tablet PC.

Would you really take it out with you everywhere you go? (do you have a manbag?) What exactly would you use it for that you can't do already? For sheer convenience I believe you are better sticking to a decent sized and powerful phone which allows you to do everything you need to while moving around and not look like a tool at the same time!

ive never had an ipad either but definately buying one next month when i go to LA!!

I'm still in two minds about it. I want it but I feel kinda bad because, well, I don't really need it. As someone mentioned above, it is a gimmick, and a somewhat useful and cool one at that, but also quite expensive.

If I do decide to go for one, would 16GB be enough? I have no plans to put music and videos on it to be honest as I have my ipad and phone. I tend to use my phone to check my emails but the screen is really small and well, it's not a top of the range phone, so the internet isn't all that good on it, and having to scroll from side to side is a problem which I won't have with the iPad.

I'm sure everyone will agree it is just a gimmick/gadget. Basically, I am not trying to decide whether it is worth the money.
#37
I am going to order now. Do apple only take the money upon dispatch? Cos if it is minimum 2 weeks waiting for dispatch, so at lewast that way, I get 2 weeks to think about it and cancel it if I change my mind. lol.

So, do they only take payment upon dispatch?

There's too many people saying yes and no. I think I will just leave it for now. What about the Motorola xoom?

I haven't read up on its specs but have read it is THE iPad competitor

Apple will put a reserve of the amount for the iPad on the iPad as soon as they processed and give you the estimated delivery date.

That's how it happens with me, I placed an order at 3am on the release day, the money was reserved on my account immediately the next day, received it on 8th April as estimated.
