Should David Beckham be recalled to the England squad on Friday?

McClaren is announcing his squad for the frindly v Brazil and the qualifier v Estonia this coming Friday after the England 'B' game. Should David Beckham be a part of this squad?

My opinion - a definite yes. Lennon and Wright-Phillips havent shown enough recently to be starting on the right. Gerrard HAS to play in the middle with Hargreaves (at the expense of Lampard) so Becks has to play.

Opinions...

Definitely - England just haven't been the same without him.
Though he's not as good as he was, he's still a lot better than many of the players on the team.

McClaren is a tosser though - he'll probably play Neville & Andy Johnson :?

I think Johnson is one of England's best strikers. You wouldnt happen to be a Liverpool fan by any chance??
#4
I think that beckham is a single dimensioned player and his only abilities are the odd free kick and a cross. (if his old legs get him in the position to cross the ball). But maybe be on the bench
#5
No then McClaren will look more of a fool and we may be able to get rid of him.
#6
Well if that idiot McLaren picks him for the squad and plays him then it surely can't be any worse than the recent England performances. England have been woeful since McLaren took over, wrong choice by the FA for manager
#7
he should if england want to succeed

Eh ?? Not exactly world class is he ?? I wouldn't have him in the B team, never mind the 1st team ??

I think Beckham should get back into the squad, he's one of the best crossers of the ball we have - and a lot better than the crap we have at the moment !!
#9
Oh please, I can't watch that sugar plum fairy dance around the pitch like someone walking on glass. If he wore a descent pair of shoes instead of those slippers he wears, he might actually be able to kick the ball without the fear of breaking his little toe. :x

He is also very over rated, over paid and over there, so I say leave him there because he will be worried about his personal safety :giggle: yea right :whistling:
#10
I think he is probably better than most when he plays on the right hand side, but he doesn't stay there. Maybe if we got rid of Mr Muppet McLaren and replaced with someone who could instill discipline then maybe.
#11
I think he should be recalled to the squad, but dont know about a starting place
#12
If only McClaren wasn't named on the sheet that would make me happy.

Awful.
#13
well i think the best crosser in the country is Jermaine Pennant, if only McLadyboy would pick him. Im afraid Arron Lennon isnt quite strong enough yet for the international scene. He seems weak even against lesser sides. But im sure that with a decent international coach he would improve his game. As for becks, i say bring him back, even just into the squad...we need his experience and his crossing power. One things for sure, if he's brought back, at least we'll have one hungry England player

Name me 3 English strikers (apart from Rooney or Owen) that are better than him.

For what it's worth I feel a bit sorry for Mclaren.

The team has been ravaged by injuries since before and during his reign.

I for one believe if we can get Owen back and up to speed play him up front with Crouch(love him or hate him you cannot argue with his scoring record)

Joe Cole on the left, Hargreaves and Gerrard in the middle and Lennon on the right we would become a good team.

Cole and Lennon will become great England palyers if they get a decent run in the team.

I think it would be a backward step to bring Beckham back now, what we need is a settled, established side.

The argument for Johnson, Defoe, Bent etc is the same, they are given one half of a match every now and then and we wonder why they don't fit in. Saying that I think all 3 are goods subs at best at the moment.

Here is my team

James (yes I know, but I don't like Robinson, too unpredictable (unlike James..lol.))
A.Cole
Ferdinand
Terry
Neville
J. Cole
Hargreaves
Gerrard
Lennon
Crouch
Owen.

Give or take one or two players this is most peoples prefered choice of which at least 5 have been out injured under Mclaren.

I don't think Rooney fit's into the current England set up very well but I would like to see a 4-4-2 with him and Rooney up front.

Have they ever palyed together?
#16
^^ lol @Ian. You're right, we dont have any other decent strikers
#17
@greg cant see McLaren having the balls to drop Lampard on a regular basis

So do I in a way. He is out of his depth and its really through no fault of his own. Its The FA's fault for appointing him in the first place. Was a feeble appointment.

We need midfielders who are playmakers and not all wannabe strikers. Beckham could control the game and pick out opportunities; most the team just boot it up the other end and chase it... You rarely see england string together more than 3 passes without losing the ball or shooting.
#20
Think he should get a recall. Better than the other options available to McClaren (but that's not saying much) He's also delivering the goods for Madrid at the moment.

Far worse players get into the squad time and again, Personally I'd rather see Beckham in there than players like Jenas.
#21
i guess we have to remember that the England manager is only able to get a few days here and there with the squad. Thats not enough...and thats not gonna change due to the savage domestic fixture pile up in this country.
#22
I voted no, He did make a good captain though.
#23
If he comes in now, surely it will only be short term,so what is the point.
What are the chances of him making the squad once he is playing in the US of A.
.......ZILCH.He was great for us once,so lets leave it at that and remember him for what he was.So i vote no.
As for Mclaren, the FA did us (Boro) a great favour. His negative tactics bored the life out of us at times and we are now much more adventurous,no more successful mind but deffo not boring.Just a pity it is at Englands expense.

i'll have defoe over Andy Johnson anyday..... defoe is another level compared to AJ

Speaking as a Scot, you guys have the players that should be challenging for at least top 3/4 in the world. But your manager and playing style are holding you back. Beckham won't change this style, he's not pacey and can't beat players (although he does play a perfect free kick) and by recalling him you're going to have two club captains and a former captain on the same field, which doesn't work.

You'd be better playing guys like Lennon or SWP on the right, although SWP needs to get out of Chelsea as soon as possible.

mcladyboy is a bit of a muppet....
Lennon hates playing on the left.... n thats where he sticks him
same with Martin Jol he sticks him on the left too at times, and he underperforms...
stick lennon on the right..... joe cole on the left, hargreaves/gerrard in the middle.

thats a perfect midfield..... i don't think Lampards past performances were good enough to make the team

up front i'd have Rooney and Defoe....

England bringing back beckham is a step forward in my honest opinion... don't get me wrong he's a brilliant player and deserves to wear the shirt..
but he's getting ona bit now....
what about when he retires?? who's going to fill the role.... mcladyboy is doing right by bringing in a fresh pair of legs on the right....

plus lets face it....
next year when beckham is playing MLS....ofcourse his performances will be brilliiant.... when compared to the other medeocre players on the field

Excellent point, there should be no fixtures for at least 2 weeks before an international and squad should be together for the 10 days or more before the match.

Got to say the F.A cup looked as if they were all tired at 65+ games in the season.

It's funny looking from the outside at Boro after there european exploits with the late comebacks under McLaren they seemed a good team to watch whereas now with Southgate they look as dull as anything. Interesting to see Bazr see it the other way round. Guess you know more being a Boro fan though.

Yeah fair point about lennon, he's never played on the right - always on the left. I too think Joe Cole on the left, Lennon on the right will be the future of England. Id still like to see Pennant given a chance. Wasnt he the most consistent crosser in the premiership this season?

Sorry, but no, totally disagree with Defoe... he's barely Championship standard let alone premiership and international level. I just think he misses far too many chances and doesnt quite compare to the strikers that other countries have.

Indeed, Rooney for one played like 65+ games this season and is still expected to pull out a performance in a high profile game.

Other countries seem to take their International football more seriously in terms of the correct preperation etc. England just seem to hope it all falls together last minute and then use the players as scapegoats

Defoe just needs to be given 90 minutes to prove himself...

as for Lennon i remmeber he came on for a few mins in the world cup on the right immediately set up a goal for England...
im sure he did - i can't have been that drunk in egypt
#32
btw AJ & Rooney shld not play together both similar players..
if only England had an Henry/Berbatov

I think you had a bit too much to drink! Lennon did not set up a goal at the world cup.

Unfortunately we do not have the benefit of giving him 90 minutes withthe pressure cooker football we have now.

Resurecting (sp) the B side is an excellent idea and exactly where the likes of Defoe, Bent, Johnson and co can gain some experience.

This would be my B team, let them gel for a season or so

Foster
Bridge
Dawson
W.Brown
Finnan
Barry
Lampard
Scholes
SWP/Milner/Pennant
AJ
Defoe/Nugent

I think if the likes of all the forward players in my list had played for the B team for a year they would be much better prepared when coming into the first team rather than the headless chickens they all look like when they come on now.

That is completely wrong. Johnson and Rooney are totally different players. Johnson plays on the shoulder of the last defender like Owen or Ronaldo (the fat one). Rooney plays in the hole behind the strikers (like Sheringham used to) although he has the pace to burst through also.

I think if you play Rooney, you have to have a player who will stretch the defence (like Owen used to) to give him room to do his stuff. I dont think a Henry or Berbatov would do this as they both like dropping off, or wide, to get the ball.

Thing is, the B team doesnt play regularly. The only play one-offs for certain reasons. This one is mainly to give Michael Owen some match practice.

Scholes has retired from international football. He would be the first name on the full squad teamsheet, no way in the B team!

Also, Finnan is Irish!

Ooops about Finnan, as for your first point, that is exactly what I am saying. They should play regular B team matches to get the fringe players ready for the big matches.

Bring back the old players. Players like Emile Heskey and Teddy Sheringham
