Should England lose tonight??

A dilemma faces us now.

If England lose, they still go through - second in their league.

We have to see what the Germany result is like, because we don't want to play them that much I don't think.

If Germany wins, then we must win to avoid playing them.

But if Germany loses or draws, then we'll play them in the next knock-out game if we win.

So to sum that up:

Germany wins = we need to win.
Germany lose = we need to lose.

What doesn anyone else think?? :?:

We need to play well no matter on the result. But hopefully a win and face the German's as soon as possible, before they get into their stride. Mostly they improve over the tournament, but I don't think it matters that much when/if we face them...

If Germany lose then Ecuador have won all the games in their group so maybe we (sorry English people, as I am Welsh) should be more worried about them?
#3
If England lose, whoever they play in the next round if they get through they will then face Argentina.

So England need to draw or win, not lose.
#4
Why not face Argentina? I think it's better to go through a World Cup playing the very best teams.

No ray... if you can get away with playing awful teams all the way through then beat one or two good ones at the end you've got more of a chance to get further.

We'll see what happens with Rooney today. As the BBC website suggests - his performance could make or break the team. If he plays well then it will give the team the hope of winning. If he doesn't seem match fit, then the team won't be as strong.
#6
Although, better to play the worse teams and get further in the competition than get knocked out earlier :)

Better to play the best teams and win [or lose if you've played well and been unlucky] than say you had an easy route through the tournament [I think].

Personally, I think Lennon is going to be the one who makes the most impact, if he plays. He's so quick and difficult for defenders to cope with.

That won't help us to win it though Ray. I know what you mean though.... more of an acheivement if you go the tough route and still make it, but I don't think England can do it that way yet.

Plus, the Germans have the advantage of being in their home nation where there's more support from fans and the willingness to please the nation.

Although the Germans are 1-0 up at the moment they haven't looked very good at all yet (though neither have England!).

I think Germany are very ordinary and would probably be an easier team than Equador to play on current ability.
#11
The Germans will still have an advantage of being at home whenever we meet them. Facing them later would be even tougher I think.

I have faith in England playing the tougher teams.

I agree with that Syzable, I'm watching it too...

Agreed - he made far more of an impact then Rooney on Thursday. I actually hope that Sven gives some other players (just not Hargreaves!) a run out, and without the burden of expectation on their shoulders we can expect some good play I reckon.

I don't think Rooney and Crouch should play together up front though - aside from being the ugliest strike partnership in the world, Crouch isn't the type of player that can feed off Rooney's play...not the way Michael Owen is.

That said, the Fink (Times stats guy) says the odds are on our side. I don't expect us to win by a big margin, but COME ON ENNNNN-GERRRRR-LAAAAAND!
#14
Definitely not Hargreaves  Hopefully we'll win and play Germany before they get stronger. They're improving throughout this Equador match!
[mod]#15
They're definately looking better in this match than the previous 2. Hope the second half is as good. Hopefully we'll improve tonight as well.

Germany is at the top now. Panic over. Except now we need to beat Sweden. ;)
#17
No panic if we have to lose and play Germany anyway :) Shouldn't be afraid to play any team...
[admin]#18
Shouldn't is the key word here hehe :D
#19
