I had a loan of my brother's xbox while he was away but he is due back soon and will want it back.

So I need to get a new console. My old PS2 is no longer an option. But what do I buy?

I don't intend playing online much but want to be able to play downloaded material on it (i have a few external harddrives) I probably will not buy many HD or Blueray movies and i generally like games such as Call of Duty, Gears of War and FIFA.

Any advice on what to get would be much appreciated and i will give rep to those that provide the most helpful posts. Thanks in advance.

Have I opened a can of worms?

360 if not bothered about blu-ray. Bigger games library (esp the type you mention), cheaper, flashable!

(ps3 and 360 here so no bias)

I would say go for the PS3 especially if you won't be using online play much, it does have a wide range of PSN titles and demos available with the full £ uk price instead of the points system (which I find quite annoying). And an easy top up system (5, 10, 15, 20 so on) supporting most credit cards (unlike the xbox) Also PSN cards are now available if ordering things costing £20 or £50.

There are a nice variety of exclusives also, I myself have both and find myself on the PS3 more. Including blu-ray built in wireless, rechargeable batteries included so no need for buying extra peripherals.

for your situation 360.
otherwise i would say PS3, but PS3 is unhackable and you want to play downloadable material soo 360 would be the one for you.

Thanks Met-Cast et al. Basically I want a console that i can play the best games on and connect my external hardrive (or stream my files from my PC or Mac)

KInda leaning towards the XBOX. Been happy with it so far and already own a fair few games that i would need to trade in. But brother-in-law i s just off the phone and he reckons his PS3 has better graphics with faster loading times and cheaper games. He also suggests that i wouldn'y be able to connect my harddrive to it as Microsoft will not accept it.

Any truth?

id go for the xbox the online stuff seems to be a fair few steps ahead of ps3 development

Ps3, its the more multimedia orientated options, and exactly what you looking for, and if your not going to play online very often, then xbox live can equate to being expensive, value for money, wise. ps3 online is free all the time, so if its only occasional online playing then its a much better option. xbox live is worth it if you play online very frequently since, you clearly cant play for free on xbox lol
#19
from what you have said, 360, the ps3 would just be stupid to buy as you don't want a blu-ray player which is about the only good thing on it HTH

It may not have the best games but it is certainly getting better, and the external hardrive thing I'm pretty sure the PS3 will be much better use also much easier to do with the PS3 I believe you can also save all the stuff onto the PS3's harddrive if you wish.

Why not try both control pads and get to feel which pad suits you the most. Then get the console with the pad that you prefer.

+1 But I wouldn't get a console just because one has a pad that feels better? (obviously the 360)

You can plug an external hdd in via USB and the 360 will see it just fine as long as it's formatted in fat32 or hfs+ if you want to watch files that are bigger than 4gb.

Well if they both offer the functionality you need then it makes sense to go with the one that has the better controller, as that's the thing you are going to be using after all.

Well as long as it has good games aswell, but seeing as both have multi-platform games then he can decide.

Brilliant console should have had the success the Wii has.
