it would be covered under driving without due care and attention.,......same as the others youve listed, but rarely enforced if at all......unless youve upset a copper

i dont think there is a law that allows women to apply their makecup while driving on the way to work......but they do

Yes they should....you cant use a phone, not ment to eat and drink....its all the same.

Hope your ok though x

it comes under the heading of careless driving so it already is illegal. There isnt a specific law against smoking but there certainly is against driving without due care and attention.

I eat and drink all the time while driving, only this afternoon I ate a kfc while driving between jobs.

You have to have 2 hands on the steering wheel other than the 2 seconds it takes to change gear. She will be the one in trouble. So yeah as mentioned above comes under driving without due care. Ive seen people reading the paper, reading maps, eating apples/bananas all sorts. A woman hit me once because she was messing with her sun visor, hit me doing 50mph i was at a stand still.

since when can u not eat or drink (obv not booze lol) when driving

when you are not in proper control of your vehicle.....regardless of the action

When it comes to things like eating, smoking, applying make-up, map reading and tuning in the car stereo, they are not against the law but drivers can be charged with careless driving or not being in proper control of their vehicle.

Discretion

It comes down to the discretion of the police and in the past a motorist has been fined for eating an apple while driving and feasting on a Kit Kat.

Research suggests such simple actions can have a serious effect on driving skills. A study for the AA found that fiddling with the car stereo caused drivers to cross lanes, go off the road, go above the speed limit and be more at risk of a collision.

But if a driver's attention falls "far below" the standard required, they could be guilty of the more serious offence of dangerous driving, which is punishable with a fine of up to £5,000 and/or six months in prison. Most serious of all is death by dangerous driving, which can carry a sentence of up to 14 years.

But you see people all the time smoking even when a copper passes in this/her car but nothing is done but if they see you eating a mars they would stop you. Heres something gross,my friend told me that some month ago he decided to pick his nose at the wheel in a traffic jam and was seen by lour boys in blue and given a stern warning that had to have as J4GG4 say both hands on the wheel. I suppose if you are driving wiv a fag angin out of your gob with smoke belowing in your face you have both hands on the wheel, until you have to take a drag

micoo: years ago they banned eating and drinking behind the wheel, someone was done last year for eating a finger of kitkat his missus passed him
#11

#14
Not really, I wanted my favorite the big daddy, but know that's a tricky meal to eat while driving so went for the 3 piece meal. I kinda rush ate so the normal enjoyment wasnt there.

you should stop reading the tabloid press. Thats a massive exaggeration.
#16
so is it still standard to go for whiplash claims if youre involved in a bump/collision?
#17
I think smoking with children in cars should be banned.

me too, i reemeber as a kid going out with the grandparents and having 4 adults smoking in the car at the same time.......and not being allowed to open the bloody window

needless to say me nor my brother smoke cigarettes

it would be extremely hard to police, especially with cutbacks in policing and the pointless war on drugs sucking away the cash

I was asked if I was ok when I rang the insurance and if I was hurt at all they would get someone to get in touch wiv me but I do not want all that. Was sheken for a while but ok now.

Im in favour of the ban, when they have had there cig they just flick it out the window.
#22
it can be worse than a bump-my daughter and her friends were in a car driven by one of the mums. She overturned it on the motorway looking for either a radio station or aircon switch-thankfully no fatalities. Stupid people get too confident and accidents happen.
#23
yes ban it at the wheel. ban in altogether.

dont know about being illegal, unless you re trying ti imply they are like a mobilephone, handheld device?
not forgetting mobiles are allowed hands free

The Road Traffic Acts Construction and Use regulations say:

"the satellite navigation unit must not be located anywhere within the sweep of the windscreen wipers or anywhere else that would cause obstruction to the clear vision of the driver"

so in theory if it not positioned correctly you could face prosecution, but again you would have to get a really miserable copper to pull you on that

no but i think kisses on forums should be banned

Yeh its considered using a handheld device and considered not in full control of the vehicle

Only really used when theyve failed the attitude test

it would have to be on my lap for quite a while to start burning and no not really you suck it up and use your one hand to put it out, thats what I did, not many people drive with both hands at the same time

I'm guesssing the people saying otherwise either dont smoke or dont drive

This happened to me once when I smoked, I pulled over and put it out. Very safe, you kind of get the instinct when it gets hot on your leg and then falls onto the carpet that you need to stop.

Of course not,no one that smokes ever lights up at the wheel and we knew/know the consequences, bad bad people, so your car was ok then in the end? yeah?

What about blowing your nose whilst stationary? Like this man. Surely that should be banned also.

I agree though, its can be dangerous smoking and driving as you have found out, wouldn't it make more sense to light up whilst you was stationairy like at a traffic light or something.

We don't just rely on ourselves concentrating and being a 'good' driver.

We rely on every single car we pass, overtake or negotiate around, we also rely on the road being in good condition, pedestrians being street-wise & being at least semi-alert to random and uncontrollable dangers which may put you at risk while driving.

For example: If you hit a pedestrian that runs in front of you and you are smoking, who is likely to be blamed ?

If a ball goes into the road from a garden and you swerve and collide with road-side furniture while you have a cigarette in your mouth, do you pay or the council ?

I cannot see how it affects your driving unless you need to take your eyes off the road to spark a ciggie.
banned#39
Just to add..

Other than using a mobile phone, there is no law as to what you can use / eat while in control of a vehicle.

It is up to the police to decide whether it is dangerous or not, so you can legally drink your cup of tea while setting the in-car microwave to defrost your sausages but if they think it's dangerous, then you're in trouble lol
#40
Wow you got an incar microwave.....

How about taking your hand off the wheel to scratch yer nuts which I have to admitt do regular..

Oh just to give you a heads up on my baby, she died and is a write off !sob sob!

details of memorial later :-((((((
