Just wondering how big everyones collection is and what shelving you use to show it all.

Got about 1300 films ( dvd, blu and hd dvd) but they are literally up to the ceiling and need ideas for units and storage. So want to see what everyone else does to store.

Mine are all ripped to my drobo storage array and then shared to all the tvs in the house.

Many years ago I used to display them but then I decided they looked chavvy.

But 1300 films would be massive in terms of GB - 4.gb a dvd 25gb a blu ray looking at..............16,000GB or 16 TB cost you about £200 in storage plus you would need 2 Drobos so £1500 !! plus the time spent ripping............would love to but it would take FOREVER

I have hundreds and hundreds of dvds/blurays too! i use the argos extra tall storage towers, they don't look too bad for the price and they nearly reach the ceiling. Got four now all bursting full (and a pile of dvds on the floor next to them, lol!)

That's my worry now - my dvds are about 900 and got 120hd and the rest are blus but my room isnt the largest and those towers only house about 350 dvds so id need at least 5 for future but they wont fit in my room no chance

I obviously did not do them all at once!! One Drobo Pro for films with 8x2tb's and one standard Drobo with 7tb total for TV Shows and Photos. All TV's / Ipad's / Iphone's / PC's can access them all at any time and even play the same film simultaneously. Thumbnails and movie sheets are assigned to all folders so it is just like having the dvd.

the footprint for them is absolutely tiny, barely take up any space at all which is great for me as my room is quite small :)

Ripped with DVD Decrypter.
Removed languages that I did not need with DVD Shrink and saved uncompressed ISO.
Thumbgen to create movie sheets, thumbnails etc....

They're are nice - making a cinema room in my house so want a nice sofa for it - still looking though.......

Got 300cm spare on my wall for films so if my maths serves me correct thats 15 units of the shelve which equates to 1200 - so still lacking a tad but see if i can make some space in my cinema room and might just buy them -cheers missp27

I know argos says 80dvds for the unit but how many have you fit - want them upright??

EDIT - only 1 left locally :-(

i can fit 88 "normal" size dvds in each if that helps, slighty more than the description says.
Ooooo cinema room sounds good, mines turning into one slowly, just bought a rather lovely 50" tv :)

Dan... If you have an old PC, just add hard drives. 1 film will only be approx 1.5 GB..... So youd get a fair few films on 8TB. And using xbmc streamed to any room in the house is far more pleasing on the eye and useful.
#19
A 1.5tb rip would look dreadful on any half decent tv.
#20
Ours are split between 2 disk stations and shared throughout the house too. I can't deal with trying to find a DVD, dusting the cases, generally taking up space that I need for other things etc.

Treated myself to the philips 56inch 21:9 a few months back for a grand - its in a small room with barely a metre viewing distance so moving it into a cinema room now ive got some extra space - gonna have new surround sound and should look brilliant even though the roomif probably no bigger than 10x8FT but ive got the boiler in there so nice and warm :p

Out of date !! ?? - Are you crazy - I've got 900 dvds which comprise of csi, monk, lost, starsky and hutch etc and 400 hd films - All my films are regularly watched and any films I have seen and would never watch again i either chuck or take to cex. No point having a dvd collection of films you will never watch again thats called hoarding and you must own a cat to do that...........And i dont
