You can get them.

The dirt cheap ones do not work, they are just a sticker you put on the phone it's supposed to improve the signal, its a waste of space, time and money.

You can buy proper 2G and 3G signal boosters, however they are expensive, around £200 upwards and nearer £400 for the good ones.

However these are totally illegal in the UK

(my old man is a network engineer for one of the mobile networks and works on their network (not in the shops) every day)

Bought one a couple of years ago (looked a bit like a mini circuit board printed onto a bit of sticky back plastic) that you stick onto the back of your phone - RUBISH
Made no difference at all - is this the sort of thing you mean?

i mean a sort of thing that you slip in next to your sim :-) almost like the phone unlocking things you can get

nope they are a scam - they don't work. KarenHornby's post is correct, you can get them but are very specialised. If you are a radio engineer you can modify your existing signal by intercepting the signal (inside your phone, amplifying the signal (caerfully - very carefully) and then inputting back into the phone. Not many people will know how to do this and you have a significant chance of frying your phone!

I can remember with the first commercial analogue phones you could buy separate high gain aerials (they were normally 8 to 12 inches in length!) which made them better in very low signal areas - aaaahhh they were the days!
