hi guys, my 4yr old has always had orange waxy ears but recently they have got bad to the point that i clean them and the next morning or afternoon he has dirty ears again its not just in them its out on the surface as well. i am wondering what glue ear is like and if it sounds like he could have it, we took him to the docs the other day as he said he had earache and nursery called us, the doc checked his ears and said he was fine. nursery have said that the other day he was chewing food and they were talking behind him and he couldnt hear them. i know he is not deaf as the minx hears everything lol didnt know if any parents out their could advise me - i am a first time panicky mum lol.

Sounds like a bacterial infection, just keep it clean and visit the doctors in the morning.

He may need to see an ENT specialist (ears, nose & throat).

Glue ear cannot be seen easily and is not about waxy discharge, I think it is the inner ear. The food part is very easy, he is a boy he loves his food and was concentrating on enjoying it............practising to be a man!!

I had leaky ears when I was little (is that glue ear?), I was getting a waxy substance on my pillows every night was horrible. Ended up having small metal grommets fitted, have fallen out now no problems since.

Glue ear is a condition that results from discharge behind the eardrum, it is not directly related to having wax in the ear. The major symptom would be of hearing loss alongwith discharge from the ear (if the eardrum perforates or leaks). The way to check for it would be to look in the ear with an auroscope, which is what the doctor would have done, when you can see the eardrum bulging due to the fluid behind it.

Having wax in your ears is completely normal (as long as there's not too much of it) and overzealous cleaning of children's ears can cause problems with infection! The wax is there to protect the ear, so a little bit will do no harm.

If you think there is definitely a problem with your childs hearing, you can ask for a referral to ENT (as mentioned above), where they will do audiometry testing of his/her hearing, though if this is happening in school soon anyway, you might as well wait.

Lots of children have problems with their ears when they are younger, this is often due to the fact that as kids, their Eustachian tubes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eustachian_tube) are not as good at draining fluid from their ears to their throats, but this is something they will grow out of. If there's a major problem, they can have grommets inserted which allow the fluid behind the eardrum to drain through the eardrum itself, but these will fall out after a while and need replacing until they 'grow out' of the condition.

I would advise to avoid the health spa, treatments they offer have no evidence base and you don't want to take any risks with kids.

Hope that all makes sense, any questions please ask.

This sounds like and infection rather than glue ear, but i'm no doctor. If the dischage is getting worse, or his ear is aching more then get him bck to the doctors.

Many gp's dont give out antibiotics for a mild infection now, so dont necessarily expect to come away with a treatment. It could also be viral and of course antibiotics wont have any effect.

my son suffers from repeat infections, which if caught early enough clear up quickly with a course of antibiotics, however if left they develop into an abcess which when perforates and we have green and yellow puss oozing down his face :(

4 of my children are blessed with glue ear. (it can be hereditary).
It can not be seen and has nothing to do with wax showing in the outer ear.
It is confined to the inner ear. Where a build up of fluid prevent the child hearing. This doesnt drain away. so wouldnt be seen.
How is his speech.?
Speech problem is usually the first sign.
I think though im only a mom remember not a doc. Your sone cud have wax build up. Which can bring on infection Some have right dirty ears all the time. You can buy stuff to soften the wax or warm olive oil is gud, The medical one not the salad ones lol.

However, i would always always say if you are concerned in any way whizz him off to doc.
Nothing to lose. And they will be happy to look. Cus if it is the start of infection beleive me its better to sort it early.

oh buy the way another reason for getting infections sorted is , last year my daughter complained of a little ear ache hardly pain just ache. Then she didnt mention it. Boxing day her ear drum burst and my life it was vile gunk was running down her chest. I was horrified.
