I remember few years back when it was coming up to my parents silver wedding anniversary - we had planned a big celebration for them........then we got a call from my parents asking for an urgent family meeting...........well we were all so worried thinking one of them was ill.

Day of meeting arrived and my poor parents sat sheepishly on their sofa with an album in their hands. They both looked so worried we were all so sure they were dying or seriously ill. Well the meeting was to tell us that ..................it wasnt actually going to be their silver wedding anniversary as they had our oldest brother a year before they got married lol and the album they were holding was actually their wedding album. They had always told us they had no wedding photo's because the camera broke.....................their wedding pics had my brother in everyone of them lol lol.

Its such a shame as back then it was such a shameful thing to happen - have a child outside of wedlock and their families made them feel so bad and they had a hurried very low key wedding.

Well as a present to them for their silver wedding anniversary my two brothers and my sister and I , booked them a whole new surprise wedding............it was so lovely. A posh car took them both to the church and there was the whole family........they renewed their wedding vows.........then a big party afterwards and a photographer to capture it all. It was probably one of the best days of my life!!!!

was going to suggest digital photo frame and load it with pics of them, maybe you could load it up with family pics instead.

Wow just wow!

My mum and dad haven't got any pics of their wedding, they said the camera broke!
Hhhhhm........................

lol that had me in stitches!!!!

Its a shame that they both had this 'shameful' secret for all those years. When they told us the response was just hysterical. My sister said "Oh my god you both are so cool" my oldest brother said "I am mortified" the other brother said " But are you really married now"

Honestly their surprise wedding was so emotional as back when they were young and married (17) both familes said they were stupid and it would never last......................40+ years later, 4 kids, 11 grandchildren and they are still so happy and in love :-D

Ah thats soo sweet.

I found out today that my grandad stopped drinking for a whole 8 months so he could afford to pay for my mums wedding as he was too proud to take for any money from my dads parents.

Im normally good with thinking of things to do but total mind blank this week - ill blame the new job.

Is nice to see the marriage can last.

Honestly though, they said my uncle was taking the pics and his camera broke!
They married at 20 and 19. Similar stories. Wonder if my parents have an album somewhere.
Will have to get in the loft ha ha :-D

OP I think if you got a book going and pass it round members of your family to add pictures and write down memories ...............that would be so original and soooooooooooo lovely

What about a weekend away, some theatre vouchers or Ticketmaster vouchers (although be prepared for the robbers fee) so they can choose to go to an event together? My friend's mum and dad had a silver wedding recently and she confided that they got loads of photo frames and the like - but how many do you need? If you got them vouchers or tickets to an event that might be something more memorable for them.
p.s Bossyboots, I think there's loads of 'secrets' like that because of the times they were brought up in, and I agree it's a crying shame. It must have taken a lot for your mum and dad to come clean so top marks to them and, if they can bear it, give them both all our best wishes!

my mum and dad had a 25th wedding party and all the guests put in momey and they brought some new garden furniture, i made the cake for the party, a big '2' and '5', i'm not a pro but a nice personal touch and showed i had made an effort and thought about it, otherwise maybe cinema or theatre tickets, eurostar to paris for lunch, orient express trip, x

My parents had their 25th anniversary last year and my brother and I got them theatre vouchers and made a photo book of their life together- was a lot of work scanning in all the photos (and sneaking in their house to get them!) but they loved it xx

Yeh my mum and party arnt really party people - well not their own. My mum in the process of deciding whether to sell the house so dont really want to but her any house items like.

I looked online last night for theatre ideas - There is like a slade concert which my dad would really enjoy but my mum might hate it if i bought her a ticket too.

OK. Coming up to my 25th next year.

Not keen on presents for anniversaries. Save personal presents for bdays, lots easier than trying to buy for 2 people. Will have a party but will tell people, no presents but if they want, can contribute to our current charity (Help the Heroes).
Too much stuff in the house and am not keen to add anymore. Theatre / break tickets a great idea but expensive, so club together with others if money tight.

What we would really love is for our kids to organise our old videos / photos into some sort of digital format. I worry that they are degrading and would hate to lose them but I don't know where to begin, and all the technology is daunting! Friend's son got all his Mum's old family photos restored (took out all the crease marks and stains). She was overwhelmed, she knew it was possible but as ever in life.....would never GET ROUND TO IT

Not a lot of help but if you pick something personal, you can't go far wrong.

For someone to take the time, trouble and effort to do this, is worth much more than money could ever buy.
