I've used skype which I get the feeling is the dumb man's VOIP but now have a e65 which is able to do VOIP nicely (or so I read). However, I am ignorant on how to do this best or indeed what advantages it will give me over skype.

My questions are kind of all over the place because I don't grasp this well so I guess a rough beginners guide to SIP would be nice (what it does, what it means, best way to get).

After that I guess would be questions on how that integrates with the e65 and 3g and wifi.

Thanks :)

I never used SIP (or any other VoIP software) on Nokia, mainly because I hate Nokia phones and never plan to acquire one. :)
As to process, read this: http://www.expansys.com/ft.aspx?i=126969&thread=171&page=1

Hi Kommunist, thanks. Regardless of the handset/client though can you give me a dummies guide to SIP? Is there a provider you recommend? Can I take incoming calls? Things like that...

Pricewise I recommend one of Betamax companies (a.k.a Voipcheap.com, Voipcheap.co.uk, Voipbuster, etc). See price comparison (in Eurocents) here.

Betamax is arguably the cheapest VoIP provider but don't expect ANY support out of them. If something goes wrong then you're on your own. I am not talking about technical issues but also account management, etc. For example, they banned my account once and I had to involve Paypal resolution centre to get any answer out of them.
But then they are the only ones offering free calls to (almost) whole Europe, Canada and US... although there is a catch.

My favourite is Voipfone, which is UK company and you can talk to real people (eventually). They are usually OK with support and their forum is quite lively.

As to taking calls - not with Betamax. They stopped incoming calls service last year due to some crazy EU legislation. Sipgate can give you free geographic incoming number, while Voipfone can give you 0700 or 0870 number (for free).

Perfect exactly the info I was looking for. What's the catch with the free calls?

The catch is that free calls are only free for 90 from last 'account recharge'. In short, say, you put 10 EUR (use Voipcheap.com, not .co.uk as in this case UK calls are free) onto your account, you'll get 90 days of free calls. Once these 90 days are over, they will start charging you normal price (1 eurocent/minute for UK calls AFAIR).
When the money ran out, you'll need to add some more EUR and then you'll get 90 free days again. Just don't expect to have free calls for life :)

Three months of free calls for 10 EUR is not bad though. I would mainly be calling UK, Canada and Spain which are all included yeah? You mention the Betamax providers are poor for support but is that really needed? or is the account banning a common thing!! I'd rather pay a bit more to a company that deserves the support.

So to be clear though - if I signed up to voipfone for example that would give me the account and settings I need to set up the SIP calling on the e65 right (and thus call "free" from any wifi hotspot)? The software they mention for the PC is only if you want to use the PC to call I assume.

Agree. And then your monies are not disappearing, you just using it to pay for calls, which will give you another month or so (depending on usage, of course).

At the moment, yes. But they might change it any time.

It is not a common thing, but they banned my account because of their error. Not just that, they also banned all accounts associated with my credit card and emails (which included my friend's account).
They reinstated it after several weeks - no apologies, no compensation, nothing.

I'd rather pay a bit more to a company that deserves the support.
Then try Voipfone. There are no free calls, but these guys are Brits and support is here.

So to be clear though - if I signed up to voipfone for example that would give me the account and settings I need to set up the SIP calling on the e65 right (and thus call "free" from any wifi hotspot)?
Correct. They will provide you with username/password and the rest you need to set up yourself. As to software, I am not familiar with Nokia VoIP programs, so can't answer this question.

Thanks as ever Kommunist for your expert help :)

Is there any line quality difference between providers (in this case betamax/voipfone) or is it all the same as they resell the same lines?

It is hard to tell. Occasionally I am getting sh*t quality on Betamax lines but Voipfone were mostly good (if only their line was always operational! :)).
