Sky Box Issues/Problem

After some help ...

Sold a Sky box to someone, and when it left the house it was 100% working, all channels were checked etc etc and it was packaged well (as I always do!)

The buyer is now saying some of the channels do not work and is asking for a refund?

Where do I (seller), and the buyer stand in this. Payment was sent via PP with fees paid, so I guess I'm at a loss as the buyer can just demand a refund anyway?

If a refund was to be issued, would it be minus any postage costs. Buyer as 0% feedback as a HUKD member, but a 193, 100% on ebay. We have 14 on here, and 79, 100% on the bay?

How can you check the rest of their equipment, surely the dish or cables might be duff or even not tuned in properly???
If you are sure it worked fine, I wouldn't be bullied into giving a refund.
#2
Buyer probably needs to realign the dish. If box was faulty then most probably none of the channels would work?
Maybe they are expecting a full sky package from a freeview service? - Ask them which channels they cant receive
#3
Yeah it could be a weak signal on their end, so not the boxes fault on that, or bad cabling or a amount of issues, the fact that some channels work and some dont to me sounds like it is a signal issue.

Either that or they dont realise that without a card certain channels(at least on older boxes) like ITV dont show up automatically.

its more the asian channels they say... but we had the full package including sports and movies..

Only some asian channels work freeview, if they are expecting zee or sony etc then they are subscription. I recon that if some channels are working there is nothing wrong with the box, get them to list the channels that dont work.

Ask them what channel dosent work .Because recently a few asian channels have been taken away such as Bangla TV.

As far as I'm aware , the reciever 's and especially the supplied sky cards are Regional . Meaning if you move the setup to another area you have to re-scan the digibox .I've only just read about this on one of my sat forums . Someone had taken there sky box abroad and certain BBC channels were missing , a member wrote ,they needed to re-scan the box and the channels will be found according to the area the box is in .
Worth geting the buyer to try re-setting the box first .

this is what he said "I rang sky customer servce they said its either the sky connection but told them my box in the living room works ok in both my living room and bedroom they sad the only problem then is the sky box which can be checked out but at a cost but i am not looking to spend any more on it. I only have one conclusion which is to send you the box back as it doesnt work for the asian channels if you can forward me your address I will post it asap and e-mail you the tracking number"

Ask him which channels do not work and then you can check if they are the free ones or if you have to pay for them

Just got this from another forum , a Sky customer in Dublin wants to cancel his Sky subscription ...blah ,...blah

this was the answer ;

If you are cancelling an Irish subscription then you will almost certainly have to "power cycle" (i.e. turn off at the mains socket for a minute or so) as the boxes often "remember" the EPG settings of the last card in them. After a power cycle the default regions should be set to BBC1 London, BBC2 England and ITV1 W. Midlands plus other channels regionalised but only for adverts. Your ex subscription viewing card (if Irish sub) will be absolutely no use (except as a windscreen scraper) as there is no Irish FreesatFromSky equivalent.

So, if the Sky box is used in another region other than the one the Sky card was in ,you need to do the re-set and it should re-tune itself to the new area it's in .

The Viewing Card wasn't part of the item I sold, so im guessing he's using another one?
#12
well the power would have been off when in the post..
#13
Yes ,but the boxes remember the settings from the old card .

go here to find out what channels he should be receiving with the Sky system;

Nearly all of these can't be got on free sat, you have to subscribe, I think he threw a few that are available to add weight to his arguement.

other person says he's bought a new SKY viewing card and with "Variety" and "Asian" Channel Pack, yet the Asian lot listed as above dont work? I'm not saying the OP is trying to con me, but want to do all I can to help him as I know the box was working 100% when it was posted.
#18
I have one box with no subscription and one with a small variety pack, most of the channels came up on the pay box but only two came up on the non subscription box, they both have current cards but I don't think that makes any odds to the non pay box.

so what you saying - most Asian channels are PPV?
#20
well, they don't come up on the freesat, on the sky basic package they come up( like Sky one) you can only get it if you have a package....mine is only a basic knowledge package at £9 a month....I think that is half price you'll have to check the website. I didn't go for multiroom again as that was more than the package at an extra £10 so I have a freesat situation in the back room and subscription in the front.

O.K. big update some of the channels were working early evening but now they are all subscription only and have to paid for, just checked both boxes and nothing is coming up but when u first posted I got at least four of them......perhaps they only boradcast the good stuff after 8pm??
#21
well he reckons its only the asian ones that aren't working? What does that tell you?
#22
Has the buyer contacted Sky to get his/her card paired with the receiver?

It seems like the buyer is trying it on...
#23
well the buyer bought the new card direct from sky afaik, so I dont know whats going on tbh
#24
Email from the buyer, stating the box does not do what it is suppose to so is asking for refund?

Worked 100% fine on day of posting

need a subscription for all of these mate, none are free to air - nothing wrong with the box
#26
says he has Variety and Asian Channel Sub? If this is true, how can it be the Asian channcels that dont work when all the other 100+ ones do?
#27
No variety option gives asian channels, you get normal free to air ones only. All the ones he has listed are 100% payable and not free. Ask him to try channel 833 (free to air Brit Asia music channel), that should work. I pay over £100 per year for the zee channels for my parents. Also ask him to read out the message on the blue screen when he tries one of the above channels - it will givehim a number and ask him to subscribe!
#28
cheers for the advice and guidance. I'll feedback to him and even show him this thread to see what he says
#29
sounds like he has not paired the sky card with the box.

tell him to ring sky and ask them to pair the card with the box, only then will subscription channels show up.
#30
says he already as, as he requested a 2nd card?

He's now put in a PP dispute as "item not as described" and thus leaving me -£52.00 in PP account? What can i do?

Well if he bought off you on ebay, then he should return the box to you at his expense via a trackable method, if off here in a thread, then pm a mod for advice, but would expect them to say the same under the fs/ft rules, if sold via pm then they won't help as it's against the fs/ft rules.
When I moved from Scotland back to the SW I was issued with a new card from Sky, but couldn't pick up all the channels I should've been able too until sky did something from their end via the telephone line ( sorry not very technical lol )
#32
It was done via PM (after the intial sale fell through). He PM'd me asking if I had it for sale, made me an offer and it went from there. From the many items I have sold (both here and ebay) not one has been broken/etc and i think he's just trying it on ....

I expect a suspension for this, about not in dealing in thread, with this OP but had taken photo's etc and described the box as it work (ie: Working, which on the day before posting, it was). He has had it upto two weeks and only now says it does work on all channels?
#33
Have spoken to others on AVF and they have said the same, that I should refund as its something to do with his SKY and not the box in question?

but if its something to do with Sky and not the box why should you refund then?
#35
stupid question but has he paired the card and the box ? ask him to go into the installers menu (sorry i dont no the shortcut a google search will tell you) and get him to do a new/fresh install see if that helps, my freind an ex sky installer (now installs motorised systems) said he would think more then just the asian channels wouldnt work if the system was faulty.
#36
exactly!

that what I thought. Why would Asian not work but all the other do!? Hmmm another question I have for him, thanks
#37
Just been reading through this issue, I work for Sky in Yorkshire, have had similar issues with customers in this region with Asian Channels. Usually a fault in a few Sky Digital Receivers, in the past we usually recommend a call back or offer our clients a replacement receiver. I know this fault is no longer an issue with the Latest HD receivers but was with the Digital ones. If you can give me details of the receiver I can investigate further.
#38
i've just received a reply on Paypal from this buyer.

Can someone correct me if im wrong please.

If he wants to return the item (ie: Sky plus box) then HE needs to pay postage. The reply (although not clear) seems to state the SELLER (ie: ME) has to pay postage for the item return?
#39
anyone help please
#40
In a Paypal dispute the buyer has to return the item at their cost and once you receive it in the same condition you can refund. If he does not send it by a trackable method then he will leave himself wide open as you could say you never received it back.I would just escalate it to a dispute and let Paypal sort it out.
