heres a strange one for yous , our sky box is made by sony that we got from sky about 9 or 10 years ago and it now suddenly has started to turn it self off, randomly, leave it on go to bed and in the morning the red lite is on its off, not sure if its over heating but out dvd player recorder sits on top of it and its just recently started doin this.

Where can i get replacement boxes from cheaply with warrenty and or can i get one from sky for free

we just have standard sky no hd or plus

It maybe the NEW standby option on Sky boxes.

They go into standby at approx 2am, they recon it saves about 1-2 watts, based on the amount of sky boxes in the UK, it is a lot.

Some boxes give you the option to switch this feature off...

It was part of a update recently.

However, knowing how old your box is, it may be the power supply.

I picked up two on freecycle with a wanted a while back.

Press the Services button on your Sky remote.
Press 5 for Sky+ Setup.
Push up twice to highlight Auto Standby.
Push left (or right) once to change ON to OFF.
Push down once to highlight Save New Settings and press Select.
Push the Sky button to return to whatever you were watching.

A lot easier with a sky + box though as it saves on the hard drive and a lot less hassle each to their own though.

Seriously if you've been with Sky that long ring them up, say your box is broken could they give you standard box for free I'm sure they'll oblige. Otherwise mention Virgin would give you a new box if you joined them.

Why would the OP want to do that?...there is nothing wrong with the Sony Box, it will be far better quality than the newer rubbish that Sky send out now.;-)

But that applies to almost all Sky receivers, including new ones due to new software, it can be switched off in a minute.;-)

Sky+ boxes record their Anytime stuff at night so are in a fake standby mode, though I've turned this off also to save on money as I don't watch that carp any way.

Sky boxes a common problem long before standby mode was added to firmware broke due to power issues the sign of this was they fail to turn on unless you leave em unplugged for a while, the power went on a random basis.

9 years is a along time and although you associate Sony with quality don't think on my travels I have seen a Sony box, that is cos no matter which sky box you get they seem to have to be replaced on a frequent basis (maube yearly)so therefore on my travels I see random makes like amstrad, grundig, pace (I own a pace non sky+ and it still works but the thomson sky + I have is dire)

You are due for an upgrade tell them you are a good customer and that 9 years of watching the same programs on a loop is enough punishment and virgin have been sniffing round.

Sony Sky Receivers are very slim and were highly desirable when they first came out.

I would keep it if it works OK, far better than the modern rubbish that Sky palm off on people these days.

thing is though encoders/decoders / video chips got better every year I have never seen the quality of picture from that Sony so cannot really say but technology moves on, yes the cost cutting every year can happen and cheaper parts used a happy medium can be struck though with cutting costs and manufacturing processes to save money.

Sky will not fix thay Sony box though they will however give that subscriber if they play their cards right a new box or at least a working unit.

Read the thread, it isn't faulty, it doesn't need fixing.;-)

I saw someone mention phone sky and tell em box was broken but yeah you are right it is not broken unless of course they forgot to menton it fails to power back on after going red. I would still phone them up and get and upgrade to the 21st century saying as + is free of the £10 subs now : lol

What make and model is your Sky box Bexxa?

My box is a Panasonic TU-DSB 20 (probably 9 to 10 years old) and since the Auto-Standby firmware was downloaded the box goes off in to Standby on its own and is frozen (won't respond to remote On key and needs to have power plug pulled to restart it) even after selecting Auto-Standby to be Off in Menu option 5 of the Services menu.

So it looks like there is a bug with the new Auto Standby enabling firmware with some older basic Sky Digibox models. All this so it can save a measly 1W an hour by being in Standby!
