Long story cut short with necessary babbling included.

We're supposed to be moving house as soon as the buyer stops messing about and gets some freaking money to pay for this place.

So with this in mind the parents decided to cancel our Sky service, with a little bit of optimism that sky would ring back and say, "you've been a valued customer for 15+ years, with full programs, here have this or that for free".

The optimism was sadly misplaced as Sky never rang back and now we appear to have less channels than someone with a freeview box. This doesn't greatly upset myself, but I'm sure my father will miss Sky sports new at least.

I'm considering getting a Humax HD PVR box for freesat. what i've been told about freesat so far is that it currently has 80 channels which will be up to 200 in november, anyone with freesat, who can comment on the service would be appreciated.

Is there a way of turning a sky box in to a freeview box?

thanks in advance

i think the only way is the freesat as you already mentioned 20 quid from sky and they send out a card

taken from freesat faq
Q: I already have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?
A: All you need to gain access to the free channels available on the digital satellite platform is a Freesat from Sky viewing card, which costs just £20. If you’d like to access the interactive services available, you’ll also need a working phone line. To purchase a viewing card please phone Sky on 08448 244 400.

you would pay 15 - 20 quid for a cheep freeview box then if the signal isnt good the picture breaks up and freezes in bad weather in my opinion freesat is the best at the mo i will get it for my kids when analog is turned off

Why would Sky sports be free on Freesat when you normally have to pay for it ?

Note there are now 2 services called Freesat.

Sky have had a freesat service for years where you use a Sky dish and sky box. You pay a one off cost of £20 for a card (if you already have dish/box), and that allow you to watch over 200 free channels. This service is provided by Sky. No monthly fee.

A few weeks ago BBC/ITV announced a new service called Freesat. This is nothing to do with the Sky Freesat. It uses a different type of box (not a Sky box) but can use the Sky dish if you already have one. If not you have to put up a new dish. No monthly fee.

You mention 80 channels going up to 200, This is for the BBC/ITV service. The sky service is already over 200 channels I think.

Confusing what !

Why not get a "proper" satellite system with 1000s of channels?

If sport and films are your thing, then sky is NOT the way to go!

Live Premier football - inc 3pm kick offs, and more up to date films can be obtained free. The target audience is NOT the UK and since there is no way to subscribe to them, its not illegal to obtain them. (And they will be will English cementary and soundtracks!) The only caveate to that would be for personal use. (ie dont go showing them in a Pub etc!)

Might cost more to set up initially (though a fixed dish system wouldnt cost much) and in the long run, more content and no money for Murdoch. You know it makes sense!

So how do we view scrambled channels without subscribing Guv and which channels do you refer to?

The only package I know of is Digitalb and that costs over £200 per year for the subscription alone.
