ok, so now for the past week our sony sky box has been turning it self off over night (standby), when we come down and turn it on.... NOTHING wont come out of standby... so we unplug it and leave it and hour and then normally it will come on... but today no luck.... it has taken 4 hrs for it to come on.... is there anything we can do to get it working like normal?? also i dont know if it is relevent but it takes like 5 mins to search for channels and the guide + changing channels are really slow to respond (like 30secs).... is it just on its last legs or something we could fix??? a new sky box is quite expensive and if its fixable i think it will be worth it. any ideas??? thanks in advance! ;-)

Have you had your sky conract longer than 12 months?? If not phone sky and they will send you a new box.

If you have had your contract longer than 12 months, I would phone them anyway. Tell them your box doesn't work, so you are thinking about canceling your contract. I did that and got a nice shiny new box!! They don't want to lose your monthly subscription fee, so they will gladly give you another box to keep the cash flowing into their pockets

I assume this is out of warranty. Give Sky a ring and ask tem to send out an engineer. They will try and charge you but don't budge. Then threaten to cancel as you cannot see why your paying very month for a service that doesn't work.

You may have to actually cancel but they normally send out an engineer free of charge.

Or if they don't budge cancel and take out a new contract in another name and get a free sky box with 1 years free warranty.

I would phone sky now and get it replaced, there is a fault with it.

I had some channels missing once, could not watch sky one and bbc channels, and they come and replaced my digibox and receiver free of charge, if I left it two more days i would of had to pay for it, as my years warranty ran out

Sorry if you already know but all Sky+ boxes go into standby in the early hours of the morning, it is to enable SKY to send software updates but this won't help with the problem of it taking so long to do a search or come on in the mornings.

yes outa warrenty.... tried phoneing and they basicly said go on then.... strange cos we have the compleate package + phone + BB?? u'd think they would want to keep us!

Mine doesnt (amstrad box - being replaced next week) but the one downstairs does.

it sounds like a PSU fault. you could pickup a box on ebay pretty cheap and then simply get sky to pair the new box with your card. or if you're handy with a soldering iron you could buy a relkit and repair it yourself. (very easy to do) or lastly buy a repacement PSU board and simply swap them over.

You need to ring Tues to Wed to get free repairs. It states weekend staff have very limited offers to keep you if you threaten to cancel. I rang a couple of months ago when my box was faulty (i.e. could not pick up a couple of channels and they wanted to charge for a service call. I rang back and asked spoke to the cancellation dept on a Tuesday and said it was cheaper for me to cancel and go for cable or terminate and become a new customer. They then offered me a service in 2 days time and this included changing my equipment for new (receiver and dish). This was all done free of charge. Hope this helps.

ok, got a new symptom, sky box is now turning on..... then turning itself off 2hrswish later (standby) and flashing loads of colours.... then just half the screen black and half grey.... i think its ******d

is it an Amstrad ?, mine did the same a few weeks back - might be something to do with temprature - too hot or cold conditions tend to mess around with most electrics.

The 5min searching is linked to your dish - obstruction, rust etc or your card might not be fully inserted and check your power supply - must be fully plugged into box as it is a common fault.


Check your scart connection - ensure fully connected

get the wife to take it out - (differentperson required) if its a standard box the john lewis deal 60del. was ver good but o.o.s now ...

cant be the dish or cable beacuse the other multiroom one works perfectly and never crashes.... this box is a sony one (cant see a model no) but is very long and looks like one of those slim line dvd players you got about a year ago (long but thin)

ny mate had one of those and had it replaced within a 2 months ... :whistling:

He had the 'thomson' branded one so check if your under warranty , if not then
one of them 'sky pay once' options is a decent buy- make sure you get the new dish or prior to install remove your old one and get rid ...:-D

(customer right as per terms of contract ...)

Have you done a firmware update?
You mention that it's a standard box (not sky+) turn off box at wall, wait 30 secs, hold in 'back up' ON BOX, switch power back on keeping button pressed, wait until all lights light up on front of box, you should get a message on screen about reloading firmware (or similar) takes about 15 minutes, could solve your probs.
If not and you don't want to contact sky, look on freecycle, there is always someone off loading a box on our local one.

The sony sky digibox is in the main very unreliable,looks great,but sony stopped making these many years ago................you can get a much better digibox for around £30 on ebay......use a trusted seller.......but i would try sky again first.............they want your money and will offer a reconditioned box free if pushed
