Recently my sky+ box has started playing up, it will just randomly turn itself off and as it is doing this all colours will flash up on the screen. It will then take a while before i can turn it back on, and when i do it comes onto channel 998.

It's also not recording programmes properly, especially on channel 4, the sound is broken all the way through anything i record.

I've tried unplugging it but that hasn't helped. The next step i suppose is a full system reset but i don't want to lose all my programmes on the planner.I also want to try and avoid paying sky a £65 call out fee.

Hi there,
I had a similar problem with the plus box turning itself off - called sky and the guy unofficially said that he had the same problem and that it was because the box was overheating - it would then need time to cool down. This was mainly due to the fact that it sits on top of my home cinema system which kicks out a lot of heat. So the advice was to place a small mat underneath the plus box; as long as there are no vent holes directly underneath from from the product below. This sorted the overheating /turning off problem out. Can't comment regarding the other problems - sorry.

Give them a call, I was having problems with the sound and also it would get stuck on a recording. I called them and they said I had ghost files on the box, told me what to do and has *touch wood* been ok since. Didnt wipe my recordings or anything
banned#3
my box did exact same thing a few weeks ago so turned the whole lot off for 10 mins, turned back on and was ok and touch wood still is ok.just needed to cool off and turn off each night.

cheers guys, it sounds like it could be overheating, it's siting just under the plasma and above my dvd player so i'll try turning it off completely overnight and see if that helps
#5
We had this problem and it was down to anytime tv. Turned off that feature and it's been fine since. Still get a ****** channel 4 from time to time but I think that is a different issue.

is it an amstraad? if so then both the pvr2 and pvr3 have known faults . if it is then pop over to digitalspy forums and you'll find plenty of advice on how to get sky to replace the box FOC even if its out of warranty

Everytime i have been cut off from Sky ahem! everything on my HD has gone when i get reconnected! The power button would stay green when turned off, anyway its totally goosed now and because i fitted it i have to pay £55 for an engineer to come out, yeah right-o!

Bollx to you Sky ive had it with your penny pinching ways, so ive gone to Virgin (not the greatest eh!?). Got the VIP package for 85squid, 1 virgin+ box, 1 normal box, 20meg bb, talk 24 + cheap mobile calls and all the tv channels.
#8
Ill try that now thx! Yeah i haven't told them im going to switch to Virgin but the deal is way better than that of Skys (even with out SkyOne etc).

Off to try that now bert, cheers!

Still get the system fault box:

Sky+ playback and recording are unavailable phone etc etc

thx anyway bert ;)

Thanks for this, I have sent off an email asking for a replacement box

I have an amstrad PVR3, but hopefully not for much longer. I only got it last month and have all sorts of problems.

Thanks very much for this I would never have found it - when I get 10 mins to read it I will and call next week - thanks very much!
#18
Right I have got a box that says Amstrad DRX280. Am I going to be able to get this changed in the same way? It is jumping quite a lot. Thanks
#19
I am getting all techy - I have found out it is a PVR3. Lets say I manage to get it replaced - what type of box do I ask for next time as I obviously dont want the same problem but I would still like anytime tv. Thanks

You want a thomson or pace model, not amstrad.

You also want a brand new box, not a refurb

You are best reading http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=615619 the first post explains it all, the others are just people who have done it and had the box replaced

this is a common problem. you have to turn off the main switch for 30seconds and then switch it back. the 998 is defualt channel so it will start there all the time. some sky tech brain on the phone line told me this.

That didn't work, that's why i emailed them . It's a known fault with the amstrad boxes and i'm now getting a brand new pvr3 on friday free of charge :)

Nope, thats just what sky tell you as its cheaper than replacing the box and customer thinks all will be fine.

There is a problem with the amstrad boxes, and the only way to solve it is to get a new box,
#24
I am just waiting for the engineer now. He called last night to say it would be between 2 and 4pm

He said he knew he only had Amstrad boxes on his van, and was going to call around a few of his mates to see if he could get another make. If not he is going to replace my box with another Amstrad, and said just to contact sky again if it continues.

So fingers crossed he has managed to find another box! If not I will take the new amstrad, as not all of them (just 99.9%) are faulty. Will be sending another email if I have the same problems though.

whats wrong with the amstrad ones?! my broken thomson one has just been replaced with one

Read through this thread (first post pretty much explains it, but rest of them show how much of a problem it is)

Well I had a lag in sound when I changed channels, but only some channels, from the start

Then after about 2 weeks it started skipping sound for a few seconds on recorded programmes, every now and then, getting more frequent as time has gone on.

I have only had the box 6 weeks

Already seeing the improvements with this box, plus we have had the dish replaced.

Not bad for £0!

Engineers were great, 1 didnt have anything other than amstrad so got his mate to come with him with a thomson.

my 'engineer' was good to, he replaced a few bits and pieces cause he said tey looked a bit old and left the old remote as well, so i was pleased. until of course i found it he gave me an amstrad! hopefully it will be okay or atleast break soon

You can get a replacement even if its out of warranty, so dont worry about it breaking down soon.

Fingers crossed your box is ok :)

Cant believe the difference in mine now! I only have to tell it to do stuff once and it does it! No delay in sound either!
#33
yeah but if takes a while i might of forgotten all about this thread
#34
The engineer is coming tomorrow to do mine, just hope he doesn't bring an amstrad box to replace it

I suggest mentioning that when he calls to specify a time, that way he has time to call other people to try and get one.

If I had waited until he arrived I would of been stuck with an amstrad
#37
Well i got mine fitted this morning, they only had amstrad boxes though and told me he couldn't get hold of a pace or thomson.

Still, it's all working fine now so we'll see how it goes

:-( Well at least you got a replacement which is working at the moment, and you know what to do if you have a problem.

My amstrad was faulty from installation, so maybe yours will be fine if it is now
