With the huge amounts of vouchers i have for amazon i am looking to get one of these from amazon.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thomson-DSI-8215-Set-Top/dp/B000NA1T02/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197208782&sr=1-3

My question is, would this come with all the stuff required for install, and if so is install possible without being a sky techie?

Secondly, can anyone rate this box? Are there loads of different types of sky+ boxes, and is this one good enough?

Thirdly and finally!, is sky hd £10 a month? if so, is it worth it and what are all the channels you can get?

Thanks, and i will give rep to people who answer my questions! If you cant answer 1 question, or can answer 1 question at least please still reply answering the question! Appreciated!

Ben

edit: another question: say, if i didnt want to use sky hd for the time being or wanted to subscribe to it during certain times, would it be possible to just use the sky hd box as just like a sky+ box when not subscribed?

Ok my answer to your first question is no, it won't come with everything you need to install it, unless of course, you already have Sky installed and are replacing a standard Sky+ box (in which case it will be a straight swap over and all you would need to do is call Sky to marry the card to the box")

There is only one manufacturer of the Sky HD box ATM and thats Thompson. I've had no problems with mine that was installed by Sky on the first day of release last year. Some people complain about the fan noise. Most complain about the size of hard drive installed in it (but this can be ugpraded if you are feeling brave")

Finally, yes, the HD side of things cost an extra £10 on top of your sky subscription. I think it's definitely worth it  . For your 10 pounds you get

BBC HD which is FTA anyway and and you get this with no subscription at all! Outstanding picture.
Luxe TV - Promotional rubbish with nothing of interest. Just has a fantastic picture!
Sky One HD - Exactly the same programmes as Sky one but not showing everything in HD.
Sky arts. Music and ballet and stuff like that. Always worth a look to see if anything may be of interest.
Sky Movies HD 1&2 - good picture quality. Generally overly repeated films, but they do show the odd classic. Only available if you have Movies as part of your package!
Sky Sports HD 1&2 - again not everything in HD and is a mixture of SS 1, 2 & 3 with pretty much all the footy in HD, cricket, rugby and sometimes a rare treat of something different. Only golf, the Superbowl and boxing spring to mind (but the boxing was only last night and it was on box office I think!) Again only available if you have sports as part of your package!
National Geographic HD
Discovery HD
History HD - all 3 above are what you would expect, but in HD. Some very interesting stuff on these channels
Sky Box Office HD ! & 2 Newer films, at a price. £4 each i think

Also apparently launching tomorrow (Monday) is Channel4 HD which will be on channel 140. More than likely need the entertainment package, but I don't know of anybody who doesn't have that! Also coming soon is ITV HD due in the spring and rumours of channels on their way are Ch5 HD, MHD (which is MTV HD), Disney HD.

Just wanted to add, if you've only got standard Sky and not Sky+, then you'd need an engineer as they need to run another cable down from your dish to your box, as the Sky+ and Sky HD boxes need the 2 feeds.

I called Sky recently to ask what you get for the extra £10 per month subscription, and personally, I didn't think it was value for money as I don't watch sports or the documentary channels. She did try and sell me on the basis they were looking at getting more HD channels next year, but when I said I think it's pretty poor value already so would the price go up if more channels were added, she said she couldn't comment on that, so I took it as a yes and decided to leave it for now.

But, if you're interested in the channels they currently have, which I think works out to be 10 she said, then £1 for each channel isn't too bad really

cheers guys, rep given...

couple of things i want to clear up:

BBC HD is totally free (no phone calls to be made as well) with a HD box?

I heard it is possible to run these cables around yourself? am i wrong?

i have sky broadband atm with sky sports as the only added extra to it if that makes a difference...

thanks again...

Have you seen this, biker14? £129 installed.
I looked at the subscription and dont think it worth it on my package ie no sports or movies, so I would be paying £120 a year extra for bbc, sky1 in hd, not worth it imo.

I have heard that BBC HD is free, but I can't remember where I heard that. Must be getting forgetful in my old age :-D

I'm not fully up there with what they actually do when they connect a second cable to your Sky dish, so I don't know if its easy enough to do yourself or not, but hopefully someone here will be able to tell you if it's a simple job or not. Assuming it's easy enough, you'd just need to know what cables/connectors to get hold of and have a long enough ladder I guess !

If you've got sports, then I'd imagine that the £10 per month subscription would be worth it as all the blokes I've spoken to about HD rave about the quality of the football games. I've never actually seen it for myself, but it's just what my friends have said. I'll probably look at the whole thing again when they've got a few more channels I'd watch

I got a very cheap Sky HD Box on FleaBay, bought a quad LNB and twin cabling, run the box in myself in half an hour.

I don't pay the subscription for the SkyHD channels, so I just have BBC HD, but it's the only one worth watching anyway!

Looking forward to Channel 4 HD launching (supposedly tomorrow?)

ooh thanks guys, channel 4 hd free as well?

will check out the links to find it cheaper now. while it would be "free" to get it off amazon it would also be a waste if i could get it for half the price elsewhere!!
