Sky HD Box Question

Just looking on eBay for a Sky HD box.
Is there any certain makes/models I need to look out for? Or are they all the same and just depends on what software they are using?

I'm guessing the software can also be updated yourself as well?

Also I currently have Sky+ so I wont need anything else apart from the HD box right? I just install myself and ring up Sky to register my card with the box.

Is eBay the best place to buy one or are there other sites to buy from or just pay the extra money and go through Sky?

Cheers

I got mine off ebay.. They are all made by Thomson at the moment but I think Pace are in the process of releasing one but these would be mega pennies..

So all the boxes are the same ones. Not like normal Sky and Sky+ ones. I had loads replaced and only when I got given a PACE box did all my problems stop! Never had a problem with a PACE box!

How much did you pay for your box off eBay?

I paid £179.00 when I bought mine last August but noticed they seem to be going for a lot more nowadays. Sky are supposed to be reducing the price to £149 from July, don't know if that's true though.

The latest version is the DSI8215WDR-89 or 4th generation - like everything as the new gen comes along they fix the bugs of the previous version, I have a 3rd gen box and to be fair it has bugs with fast forward, which is very inconsistant and a real pain (kind of on 12x or 30x jumps all over the shop) the other problem is I have recorded programmes that just wont play back.

I bought mine of eBay and of course had no warranty but that said I've not had an serious issues (other than those described above) the ffwd is a pain but you can live with it and with all the repeats on sky if something doesn't record u'll find it again.

I love the additional storage space on the box sky+ was great but just not big enough, I don't watch any of the Sky HD channels (I watch Blu-Ray through my PS3 so £10 for footy was too much) The BBC HD is superb and there Euro coverage excellent... whats more its free.

For the storage alone I'd recomend it

Any links to this? Might be worth waiting a few weeks if that is true! :-D

EDIT: Found it! http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-news-announcements/23404-1st-july-sky-hd-will-change-sky-hd.html

Install - £30 (new customers), £60 (existing customers) Nice way to treat your existing customers!!

If you only put SD programs into your planner then the extra storage is great.. If you subscride to the HD service and record these programs then they will use up to four times the space as a standard program.. I am seriously thinking of putting a larger hard drive in mine as I am having to delete things I havn't watched.. A great bit of kit though..
Have you thought about freesatHD?

Not alot on there at the moment but once you buy the box it's as it says on the tin.. free..

Only BBCHD,ITVHD and Luxe tv HD at the moment... But more to follow and no £10 per month..

But with Sky HD you don't have to pay the £10 to receive the free HD channels right?

No you don't... You'll receive the same as freesat plus CH4... I think.. Like I said earlier I have got a skyHD box and I personaly think it's a fantastic bit of kit..

Guv is the one to give you an honest review on freesat... The freesat uses the same satellite as sky so no need for realignment..
