Just wanted to check out what sky would tell me if I rang up as a 'bloke off the street' regarding upgrading my Sky+ box to HD.

Here's the story I got.

1) If I didn't want the HD pack (therefore only wanted to see BBC HD etc) it would cost me around £200 for the box.....and I wouln't see any HD channels....the only gain would be the extra recording space.

2) If I did go for the HD pack at £10 pm then I would get the box for free, but would be charged a £60 setup fee.

So, I questioned the setup fee - it consists of the engineer running a 'HD' cable from my dish.

At that point I put the phone down.

I'm sure i'd heard/read that a Sky+ box can be replaced with a Sky+ HD as a stright swap, no extra fancy cabling etc - is this right?

Also - If I don't take the HD pack will be still be able to view BBC HD, ITV HD etc?

Just want to check my facts before ringing again.

Self set up :) apparently easy to do.
All you pay for is £10 for hd channels pm.
Although if you ring and press then, threaten to cancel etc thn they will probs give it to you free.

My dad just got Sky HD installed.
We've been existing Sky customers for donkey's years, and have had Sky+ for a while too. We also have a multiroom subscription also, along with all the big packs paid for monthly also (Movies, Entertainment, Music, Sports, Documentaries etc.).
We had Sky HD installed for free and got the box for free as well. We pay £10 a month extra for the HD broadcasts and that's about it.

However, I wasn't in the house when he installed HD so I don't know about the new cables and such, although we DID need a new cable for the multiroom which had a plain ol' sky box but was replaced with the old Sky+ box. So I'd take a guess and say a new cable would be needed, but can't be 100% buddy. Sorry.

no extra cables needed if you have 2 cables coming from your dish into your room then that is all you need we had sky plus and they just swapped the boxes and added a hdmi cable from the box to the tv

We didn't need new cable :)

If you have sky+ installed you will have the cables already there for the HD box to work as the same cables are used,it is really easy to install so ask sky about self setup and you will not be charged for installation.

yeah you can get the box sent out free and you set it up yourself, just a matter of swappng over the cables and giving sky a call to pair the card with your box

You would be able to see, C4 HD, ITV HD, BBC HD & Luxe HD for free without paying £10 a month

Just as a matter of interest (as I may upgrade) what happens to your normal sky box. If they let you keep it is it worth selling and how much would you get for them?
#10
Its your box do what you want with it

so are they worth anything?

Not alot about £20-£30 at a push

So basically, as I suspected, she was talking bo**ocks!

From what I gather if I already have Sky+, with two coax cables from the lnb to the box, it's just a case of swapping the Sky+ box with a HD box & then giving them a call to pair up the card with the box.

With this setup I can view BBC HD, ITV HD etc for free & don't need to pay them £10pm for the 'HD pack'.

Correct?
#14
Will they send you a HD box without signing up to the £10 a month charge then? Surely not.
#15
The "HD Cable" I'd imagine would be the HDMI cable connecting your box to the TV - standard sky+ only uses a scart cable I think. In other words the type of cable between the box and tv is different, which makes no odds to installation whatsoever.....

The father in law just got HD fitted, he phoned them after a week to cancel the £10 subscription as you've got (i think) a 30 day cooling off period. Could be worth trying if you don't want to pay the sub.

Did he get a free box because if he did he will either have to send it back or will be getting a bill for it

He wasn't asked to send it back and i don't think he's been charged. He's popping around later, i'll ask him.

Ok just spoke to him. He canceled within the 30 cooling off period which gives sky 41 days to collect the box. if its not collected, its his to keep. He's had it about 3 1/2 weeks now and had no contact from sky. He paid £30 for sky to deliver the box and fitted it himself.

Was on the phone to Sky earlier, didn't want to start off down the HD route at first, just told them circumstances had changed & was looking at reducing my monthly bill.

Got put through to the 'programme advisory dept', explained this to them & after a few umm's & arr's & a bit of clicking of screens from his side he advised that there was nothing he could do, even when i'd brought Virgin media into the equation.

I said it was still too dear so asked for cancellations (retention!)...........he did a bit of 'thinking' & offered 6 months at half price (ie I pay £21 at the moment so the next 6 months will be £10.50).

At that point I brought up the HD box.

He offered that for a one off payment of £60 if I didn't take the HD pack & threw in free installation (at that point I mentioned the self install etc).

He wouldn't be pushed for both offers......it was either the 6 months 1/2 price OR the HD box, not both.

I asked about the £10pm offer with the self install & free HD box - he said there would be no problem me taking this, even being on the reduced offer for 6 months.

In the end I went for the 6 months at £10.50 & will probably give them a ring in a week or so to go for the HD pack, which is still a cheaper monthly payment than what I was on to start with.
