Hi. Thinking of buying a second hand Sky+ box (not HD). Can any of you pros suggest or help with what I need, or need to do once I get the box? I have traditional Sky box at present.

Many thanks to those who reply.

You'll need another cable from your dish to your box, and a new LNB probably, depending on your current one.

And a SKY+ Subscription.

Not strictly true about the Sky + subscription. As long as you have some sort of paid package from Sky then the recording facility will work on the Sky + box. The Sky + subscription used to be an extra tenner a month but this has long since been dropped. If you only want to use the Sky + box to receive the free channels then the recording facility will not work.

You'll need two feeds to the Sky + box and if you're going to use your existing box in another room then you'll need a feed to that room too. For this you'll need a quad LNB fitted to your dish.

By the time you've paid for the box, the cables & have taken your life in your hands to set it up you will have wished you'd paid the £99 to get a new one installed by Sky. Your dish needs to have two leads running from it into the the box (so you can view one channel and record another at the same time).

I had thought of doing this for my parents but for the sake of perhaps an extra £30 or £40 getting Sky out seems a far more sensible option, than clambering up ladders, drilling holes and praying that you've done it right.

You'll need a 2 cables going from the LNB at the end of the dish to the new box which you will have to do yourself or get an independent engineer. If you want multiroom that'll be £10 a month so you'll need to phone up Sky and get it added to your bill :)

Or you can get a Standard box installed for multiroom for £60 from Sky

Get some shotgun satellite cable (ebay/maplins etc) and a quad lnb (cheapest on ebay), shouldnt need to drill any holes with that cable. plug it in, ring sky and tell them you have a sky plus box.
