I dont know if anyone else has had similar problems, but we had sky+ not long after it came out and it broke. It just kept freezing when recorded programmes were played and failing when trying to record.

Replaced it about a month ago, but it is doing the same again :viking: . its a real hastle to watch anything. Has anyone had/herd of this problem and know any way of fixing it?

thanks

This has been on BBC Watchdog for about three shows.

RickyBobby how long have you been with Sky on your current "deal"?
I ask because you could leave them if over 12months...

However even VIP customers (celebs etc, Watchdog had Jimmy Carr on I think?) have to put up with downtime on their Sky+ or problems and wait for the next (usually) refurbished model someone else returned.

Welcome to MurdochCo :)

we have been having nothing short of nightmares with sky+ and the exact same problem. Box has been replaced 5 times ! And its still having problems. Their customer service is VERY poor too. Promised to send out engineers lately and they never showed up on the day (so I wasted a whole day). Believe it or not this happen 4 times in a row ... they just never turned up. Call up sky customer services and they promise you all kinds of things especially a call back ... which never happens.

Really sick of sky+ but cannot do without too ... seems they have the monopoly when theres no btl/telewest in the area.

Please let me know what you do with your problem ... any other advise from others would be great too.

thanks

Whatever you do,don't pay sky anything for repair or a new box.
I rang earlier this year as i had problems with my sky + box. They told it me it would cost x no. of £'s to send an engineer (think it was about £65).I told them i couldn't afford it and to stick it and would like to discontinue my services. They put me through to a very charming lady who straight away said they would send an engineer free of charge. The engineer came, replaced the box witha reconditioned unit and that was that.Insist on a sky engineer and not a contractor.More chance of them showing up and far better service. The contractors just want to be in and out in 5 minutes, but the sky engineers just make sure the job is done as they are not trying to make every second count.
HTH. :santa:

Touch wood, I have never had any real problems with Sky+. Had the box for 18 months now, and apart from a few technical issues, nothing else to report.

I saw the programme on Watchdog as well, felt sorry for the bloke from Sky on there saying there wasn't any major problems lol!!!

Luck of the draw I guess!!!!

I'd say its nice to know i'm not he only one, but it's a complete joke that so many people spend a fortune on sky and they can't have the decency to bring out a box that works!

The watchdog article is v amusing though:

Wilson said: "Three quarters of our calls are answered in under a minute. Occasionally, there can be peak demands but we work really hard to forecast that."

I dont believe that for a second! thankfully i have that free number for sky so i dont have to pay for the privelage of being on hold!

oh, schizoboy, have been with sky since the days before digital and havent changed the package once. so im certain its over 12 months.

It would be good if they had a competitor so that there was an alternative. I'd switch instantly.

Can anyone recall the full reset on these sky+ boxes, i did it a good 5 months ago, holding the arrow keys on the front until it does a rewind motion thingy for 2 mins or so, which completely re-formats the drive and made a hell of a difference but i want to do it again and cant exactly remember what to hold down??

1.Switch off at wall
2.Switch back on while holding the left and right navigation buttons
(the ones on the front of the digibox, not the remote.)
3.Hold them for 30 seconds, until the green play light comes on
4.Press select. The play light will go backwards for up to 3 minutes,
then the box will go into standby for 2 minutes.
After these 2 minutes of standby, switch the unit back on and you'll
find the drive is fully formatted....
Don't forget all recorded programmes will then be lost.

Fantastic, thats the one, beautiful its got loads of space again (including the 10% that seemed to have just got lost) and its smooth again, - I recommend this to anyone having problems with their box, i originally found out about this because a sky engineer came round and that was all he did to make it work again, didnt replace it!!

If you are having problems with sky plus try this:

http://www.eeggs.com/items/30908.html

provides access to the engineers menu, this allows to to rebuild/repair, a word of warning if you choose new installation you will erase everything from your planner.

My system used to lock up all the time when i first got it then after a few rebuilds it has been fine since (touch wood)

thank you darknoiz but the method that bazr has provided is a beter method than just pushing new installation, i recall my conversation with th sky engineer when i first did a full reset and he said it doesnt fully format if you do new installation where as holding the arrow keys etc and watching it do a rewind in lights, is by far superior, im sure bazr will agre with me.

3 of us got Sky+ on the 28th of Dec and we all received the Thomson boxes. Prior to Sky I had been using a Humax PVR and personally I find the Sky box makes a horrendous amount of noise compared to my near silent Humax recorder.

Any idea if I have any chance of getting Sky to swap the Thomson box for a Pace? :)

I do agree that the method i posted does a good job of a full reset. Not having tried anything from the hidden menu i can't comment, but it is good that any methods of help are published on here,so there is a better chance of folks getting a fix on their machines without calling sky.;-)

Do the other 2 who got the thompson boxes also report horrendous noise.I only ask as i have a thompson box and it is not at all noisy.Mine is Sky + HD,so don't know if they are any better than the normal + box.If it is as bad as you say, then reject it as it is not fit for it's purpose and ask them to exchange the unit and if possible make it a pace box.Tell them you have heard other boxes and your's is horrendous in comparison.Ask for a sky engineer as well as you will get a far superior visit than from a contract engineer.:)

Well, my friends have never used a PVR before so they would just assume that's how it's meant to be. They are certainly not 'tech' people by any means :-P

I'll have to have a listen to theirs later today, but I assume there's nothing wrong with mine and it just isn't built to the same standard as Humax.

Even if it is normal for these boxes to be that noisy, you can still reject it as it detracts from your viewing pleasure.Tell them that you know the pace box is not noisy like the thompson as you have heard the difference and if you don't get one they can come and take it away and get your money back.

The sky+ man is coming tomorrow with another new box. Hope this one works

www.Digitalspy.co.uk tends to have very active tv type forums...
If someone knows of other good ones please post them here.
Ideally there should be a way to get Sky to give you a new one again if you know how or find out please post here.
