Sky + query. Help/advice appreciated.

Those nice people at Sky have given us free Sky+ and they are coming to install it tomorrow. I need some help please.

At the moment we have Sky freesat with a normal Sky box. We paid £75 for this and had 4 free mixes for 6 months which is running out. We phoned to cancel and this is why Sky said we could have a Sky + installation for free.

My questions are
Does the original Sky freesat belong to me ?
Am I within my rights to ask them to install a new dish etc ?
Does Sky + use the same dish, leads etc anyway ?
Will the Sky eye thingy that goes upstairs still work with Sky + ?
Can I use the old installation to get the new BBC/ITV freesat ?
Will the engineer get stroppy with me ?
Any tips or tricks I should know about.?

All help will be greatly appreciated and rep given where due.

Thanks in advance :)

If you are out of contract i would say that it does.

Pass.

Does Sky + use the same dish, leads etc anyway ?
Same dish but requires twin "shotgun" cable.

Will the Sky eye thingy that goes upstairs still work with Sky + ?
Yes

Can I use the old installation to get the new BBC/ITV freesat ?
Yes

Will the engineer get stroppy with me ?
Offer him a cuppa as soon as he arrives. It will make a difference if you want a favour :)

Any tips or tricks I should know about.?

I'll try and help...

I think the freesat box does belong to you and you can use this in another room in your house because the nice man fron Sky should fit a quad LMB that will leave two spare feeds..
They will use the same dish and just replace the LMB but if your dish does look a little ropey they will change it.. Installer will run another cable usually but the side of the existing one for your sky plus features to work...
Yes the eye thingy will work with the plus box.. ask the nice Sky man to turn the 2nd output on in the installers menu...

No the sky man will not get stroppy with you..

If you need to go into the installers menu to turn on the RF output 2 on for your magic eye thingy you'll need to press:

Services on your remote, then 4 followed by 01 select.. This will get you into the installers menu..
Scroll down to RF outlets..
And then RF outlets power on..

And thanks hottoshop..... You've just turned me into a four circle.......... wheyhey..

your magic eye wont work unless you get an additional sky+ remote

ask the engineer what brand box will be installing before he gets one out the van . try get a pace if poss otherwise amstrad. the thomson ones are useless

ask if its a new box not a refurbished unit

the dish may be replaced depending on condition. i had sky + installed last week an the engineer took one look at my old dish and gave me a new one.

other than that just keep an eye on them, tell them where you want the cable to run dont let them just do it easiest route. dont be afraid to question anything the guy who fitted mine was only to happy to answer.

one last thing be aware that health and safty states they have to drill a 10mm hole in the wall to secure their ladders to with a strap if going up to a dish

You can usually see if your getting a new or reburb receiver.. A new receiver will come in a nice shinny sky plus box with all sorts of nice pictures on it and a reburb will come in a plain brown box.
You should have a new one on a new install.. Do not except one that comes in a brown box..

You will see as soon as the installer takes the receiver out of the box what breed it is..

A thomson as no vents on the top..

A pace has a row vents on the top of the receiver on each side..

A amstrad will have vents all over the top of the receiver..

It seems the Amstrad causes the most problems.. Mostly noise.. Good luck with the install..

Thanks again guys, I've learned a lot.

I guess because I am getting it for "free" I feel a bit embarrassed about asking for too much, lol.

Never dealt with Sky before and they seem to have been very fair in my situation. I'm sure they'll get their pound of flesh though !!

na you look it up edna clouds.

anywhere on internet messages boards you will hear the thomson is the one with a bad noise problem. the pace is far and away the best the amstrad i guess is what you would call acceptable lol.

we all in the wrong job anyway if you work for sky you get everything free. my installer had sky hd and 2 sky + boxes at home , free broadband and they get halfprice boxoffice movies and the wrestling/boxing ppv type stuff is totally free. not bad eh.

sky and fair in the same sentence lol. take em for everything you can i worked hard to get my sky+ free. cant even get virgin media in my postcode but hey sky didnt need to know that while i was threating to leave

If you get a proper 'Sky' engineer - you can generally ask them anything you like and they'll do a good job, if however you get a sub-contractor - First Line Digital for exampe - then it's possible you may not get the best install possible - just my own personal opinion of course.....
We have the Thompson, and have no issues with it - there is a slight whirring when the hard drive is spinning - but what can you expect? - it's a hard drive at the end of the day! - My PC makes a hell of a racket as does my 360 - the Sky box is nothing compared to these - but i agree, the Pace is supposed to be the Daddy!

try and avoid getting an amstrad box

We have 2 thomson boxes and they only make a noise occasionally when switched off (they automatically go to standby in the middle of the night) and when turning on.

Had an amstrad and got it replaced because we had nothing but problems with it, and online forums suggest there is a problem with all amstrad boxes.

Thanks to everybody for your help, much appreciated.

The Sky man has been and gone and everything is setup. He was most helpful.
Only downside is that he only had Amstrad boxes on his van (or so he said). I raised the point about Amstrad being rubbish and he totally agreed, didn't try and B/S or anything.
He has left us his phone number and promised faithfully that if the Amstrad one starts playing up then to call him and he will replace within 24 hours. He also promised to replace with a Pace or Thompson one and again said the Pace ones were the best.

I guess I can't ask for anything more under the circumstances.

Thanks again all.

Oh just thought. One last question please if anyone knows.
When we did the "deal" for the Sky + we could only afford the basic 1 mix but the salesperson on Sky told us that at any time we can phone up and change the mixes and even do that on a monthly basis.

I was dubious about that as I hadn't seen it anywhere. I would really like to get Sky Sports for the Olympics so can I just phone Sky up and order Sky Sports for the month that the Olympics are on and pay the Pro Rata fee, ie £30 without having to subscribe for a year or whatever.
Same for say the next footy season ??

Thanks for any info. Repped all that have helped :)

Phone Sky and ask them but you may need to ask them more than once to make sure..

And phone them on 01506 421884 if you need to speak to them.. straight through and a lot cheaper than 0870..

As far as I know, you have to have a contract with them for 12 months. The amount you pay doesnt matter, as long as you keep the subscription. So, you can change your packages monthly, as long as you dont try and stop the subscription all together, as that is when you would have problems

how you getting on with Sky+ hottoshop?
It totally changed the way we watch tv when we got ours - ain't fast forwarding through ads the best!!

When I first got sky installed I got the full package (to get free box and install) then after a month changed to the minimum for the remainder of my 12 month contract.

When that expired I cancelled but still wanted Sky Sports Extra for the American football season. I was able to add that in (just after the phone call) and cancel it again as soon as I didn't want it anymore.

So I would imagine you will be able to do the same on top of your basic package.
