I've just been given a Sky + box from a friend who cancelled his subscription. I've wired it up to one of the spare LNB slots as I've already got Sky HD downstairs and a Sky multiroom digibox in another. Yet the recording feature wont work. Was I wrong in thinking the record feature was free? Will Sky switch it on if I phone them?

Thanks,

it's free but it needs to be enabled

it should record the channel that you are watching but it wont record a different channel as you need a splitter on the cable

The record function is free, however you have to subscribe to the multi room feature, so that Sky know you have a second box. You would then have to tell them that the second box is a + box.

So the multi room will be an extra £10 a month plus you will need to connect it to a phone line for 12 months.

Also on top of this, i believe that both the LNB feeds have to be connected to the box fo the box to be able to record, however i might be wrong on that one.

just call up and ask for a sky+ subscription to be added to your account
and yeah you need 2 cables if you want to record a channel and watch another or if you want to record 2 different programs

So a phone call to sky should sort it out?

Yeah, I guessed that. Its only for my daughter to tape her programmes on Cbeebies and Tiny Pop

Yep, thats exactly what I did.

Tell sky your last box died, and your friend gave you this one. They will ask you a few questions (such as viewing card number, and the serial number of the box from the services menu) then the operator will enable it for Sky + use.

EDIT: To answer your question, a phone call will do it. Also, check that all the channels work! After I hung up from talking to sky I noticed that Sky Sports didn't work, so I had to phone again. Wasn't a problem, they just fixed it for me

yup should do, i had to wait months for them to add things to my account but that was due to some problem with their system which has been fixed now. it should only take a few minutes to add the subscription to your account.

When I tried to record a message popped up and said something along the lines of " to enable recording blah blah blah ". The Sky + box has the newer white viewing too. I already have the full HD package along with ESPN and a multiroom subscription so to charge me just to switch the recording feature on with be well harsh.

Nice one. Will give them a ring tomorrow. One other thing though. Will it have to be plugged into a phone line? Ain't got one in the daughters bedroom.

You "should" have it plugged into a phone line. But mine isn't and I have had no problems........yet

my multiroom had to be plugged in for 12 months, just to prove it's still in your house nothing to do with the recording, i unplugged it 2 months after it was installed, rang them up and said the cable had been cut and if i really needed to replace it, they said no so i didn't bother plugging it back in.

Too be honest, my old Sky + box and my new HD box have never been plugged into a phone line. OK maybe on the first day of installation but never since. Just wondering do I need to plug it in just for them to enable the recording feature?
#15
It needs to be enabled plus you need two lnb feeds not one. A splitter will NOT work, this is because some channels are on a horizontal and some vertical signal. If you try to watch a channel on a horizontal channel while trying to record a vertical channel then it will fail.

A call to Sky will enable the box for you.

Anyone know the number to call?

Phoned them about 5 times earlier. No luck. They insist you must have another subscripition on your account to get the record feature to work. So even when I'm paying for my HD downstairs, and for multiroom in our bedroom, I've got to pay for the record feature because I;m only using it as a freeview box.

Is there any way of getting a Sky recording put onto a hard drive? I haven't got Sky and my Dad wants to know
