Sky ripping my dad off re: sky+ box?

Hi All

my father has been with sky for over 20 years, through this time he has never cancelled and has always taken out the full package (pays around £50pm). Anyways he has a bog standard sky box and i told him that he'd probably get a sky+ box for free if he rang them, anyways he did call them and they've tried charging him £149 for the box and £60 installation. Has anyone got any advice on how to get my old man a sky+ box without paying £210, i wouldn't mind paying for the installation but for the box after 20 years of loyalty is a joke.

Any help thankfully received, ps sorry for the long post

Neil

I called up and said we were going to virgin because they had offered free v+ box and free installation, they said virgin wouldnt offer that and I said they did because they knew we were with sky. Said ok, free sky+ box. I said couldnt afford installation and virgin were offering it free, said he would have to speak to his manager, came back 2 minutes later and said free box and free installation

We were full package for about 8 years when I called and had never had anything from them in that time

i had been a subscriber for 8 years , sky+ box packed up and they wanted 100 quid for a replacement, i couldn't get anymore out of them so i cancelled my subscription and took out one in my partners name and account details and the deal i got was amazing!!
in twelve months i'll cancel again and rejoin in my name , so bring on another great offer :)

Ask to be put through to cancellations, its the people there who can offer best deals and makes you seem more serious

They might only want to speak to the account holder when discussing cancellation or upgrades.

Yeah agree with others. We had problems with our sky box about 1 mth ago and Sky wanted over £100 to fix and send someone out. We told them we have been a loyal sky customer for years and threatened to leave and go to Virgin and they agreed to do it all for free. (lucky they did as ended up having a full system replaced dish etc) Just tell them the same and I'm sure they will give your dad a free sky + box, they wouldn't want to lose his custome at £50 month. Good luck x

I called last week and asked for disconections because I wanted to try for free sky sports for a week but they could not do that. We had a chat about what they had but it did not interest me. Finally they offered 25% of for 6 months and no tie in. Took 5 minutes.

He can give authority for you to discuss over the phone

Yes, they are completely ripping your dad off :x

As per their own website - http://packages.sky.com/hd/

Ok, it's a HD box, but it's currently free for existing customers with a £30 installation fee. If he doesn't want HD, then their website shows the following for Sky+ http://packages.sky.com/see/EquipmentSkyPlus.aspx

If they're willing to give away a HD box for free, then I'm sure they'll budge on the cost of a normal sky+ box

Yes just tell them you have power of attorney as he's elderly and mental

HI MY DAD HAD EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM 3 WEEKS AGO. I PHONED AND SAID HE WANTED TO CHANGE TO BT VISION . AFTER FIFTEEN MINUTES ON THE PHONE TO THE CANCELLATIONS DEP THEY AGREED TO FIT A SKY PLUS BOX FOR FREE INCLUDING INSTALLATION (IE DID NOT COST MY DAD A PENNY) AS LONG AS HE KEPT FULL PACKAGE FOR A YEAR THE LADY I SPOKE TO WAS VERY HELPFUL .

When I phoned up to see what they would offer for HD (prior to current deal) they told me that it would be £60.00 installation.

I asked them why when the leads were already here (currently have Sky+) so there is not actually any installation needed.

I was told that the £60.00 pays for a Sky engineer to visit, 15 minutes demo time on how to use the box, and...the best one of all....the insurance for the Sky mans van! And I would have to phone them back the same day to get this deal. I told him that I would not be pressured into any deal with Sky and he said that it wasn't a pressure sales technique! Of course I corrected him on that one.

I still have my Sky+ Box!

Hi, ask to be put through to the cancellation dept straight away - ring for him - he will just need to go on the phone to confirm he is happy for you to talk ot them on his behalf.

We did this and explained that with the digital switchover (we were in the first area to go) it wasn't worth us staying with Sky as we had so many other channels to watch free - and we would only be interested in staying if they could offer us something worth staying for. They offered 3 months subscription at half price and i said i was looking for more than that - and they offered Sky+ with no fee for fitting - all i paid for was an extra control for upstairs (we have the magic eye thing). Try this number to get through as i don't think it costs you anything to phone (or it didn't when we sorted it all out) 08442411735.

Good luck

I phoned them yesterday and they offered the box for £50 and installation for £60.....said forget it but still a better deal than what your being offered.
Thing is I can't risk telling them I'll go else where as I can't have Virgin or BT in my area yet and I'm pretty sure Sky would know this!!

I'm in the same situation :( For new customer's their offereing a free sky + box, £50 M&S voucher with a £30 setup cost. We've been with sky for 13 years and we've had the same box all this time and I now want the ordinary sky+ box and the old box moved upstairs and would take up a multi room subscription.
My mum phoned sky this morning and they wouldnt give her anything decent, they told her we wouldnt qualify for a free sky+ box even though i've been with them all this time. So she said i would leave and get sky put in my name as a new customer, they then said there was a 30 day cancellation notice period and that I couldnt take out a sky package until these 30 days were up therefore we'll be stuck without sky for god knows how long.
So annoyed that they dont give a c*** about existing customers!!

Think thats bad, I havent had service since August as the signal died(on a 1 month old dish and cabling) and despite several(friendly) engineer visits that sorted the problem for like a day at a time they have charged me, I cancelled over a month ago and they are still billing me for Decembers viewing and had the cheek to send me a letter saying my direct debit has been cancelled and they want to charge me fees!

And I was promised over the phone that I would get a credit of all the time I lost to my bank account that now they cant find a record of the call on the system! "%&*"£"
