Hi guys after some help here, I am getting a Sky+HD box delivered later today from Ebay, and I was wondering if i need to phone up Sky to get them to pair my card with the new box ? The last time I did this when i went from the normal Sky to Sky+ they told me that i had to sign up to a new 12 months contract, do I need to do this again ? Im not interested in the HD pack, I just want the free hd channels and the new EPG. So can anyone shed some light on this ? I dont mind phoning them up to pair the card, its just i dont want to be stuck in another 12 months contract. Rep will be given.

I'd say yes you do...my In-Laws went from an ancient Sky box to a Sky+HD box a few weeks ago, and even after the technician left, they still had to phone up to get the card paired wih the new box.

I would have thought Sky would want to rope you in to a new contract - effectively you're trying to change the services they give you without letting them know...wouldn't be suprised, but good luck trying to avoid it!

Yes you do have to phone them and get the card paired with the new box but dont let them try and con you into taking out the HD pack just because you have a HD box. If they try it on explain to them that you know they now provide sky+ HD boxes on all new installs regardless of the type of package the customer subscribes to (sky+ or sky+ HD) and let them know you only want the FTA channels as knowing sky there going to try and get you on the HD package.

P.S if its an amstrad box you have brought, try connecting via scart and then HDMI and see what you think of the picture quality in SD, alot of people (myself included) dont think the SD picture is up to much via HDMI.

Be interesting to see where you get with this, as I have just upgraded to HD.

Tbh I'd still pay the £10 with all the Sky 1, Discovery HD etc you get as well.

Just had mine upgraded. The engineer used the phone line to update the firmware in the SkyHD box

I just had a new Sky + HD box from Sky, and it was updated without a phoneline as mine isn't connected.

I was thinking of getting one from ebay in the first place (until sky offered me one free, with free installation and six months free HD pack) but I'm pleased I didn't as the engineer had to change the front thing (technical!) on the dish, and the cable that comes into the house - now instead of just one lead it has two, which both go into the sky box (last sky box only had one input) - I couldn't have done that myself.

I bought a s/h HD box and had to call them to swap the cards. First two I spoke to said I couldnt do it unless I signed up for HD but the third one did it and said she did not know what the others were talking about. You only get FTA HD channels no matter what non HD subscription you pay.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far, on my blackberry just now but will definetly leave rep later on the laptop. The main two points I am interested in are will I need to plug box into telephone line ? and will I be tied into another 12 months subscripition ?

No you wont have to connect to a phone line (mines not) as they send the signal to the box to pair it. Most likely you might have to do a soft reset by pressing and holding the backup button on the box while you turn the box off and back on again.
And no you wont have to sign up for another 12 months, there are plenty of FTA HD channels so you dont need to pay the £10 HD sub unless you want the other HD channels of course.

Well I got round to putting the box up last night, and I didnt even need to phone up Sky, just put my card in and away I went. It was the Amstrad box I received, and I am happy with the picture in SD although via the scart I dont think I had a great picture at all, so anything would be an improvement.

Loads have said that the SD picture from HDMI is not as good as it could be.
