Sky are set to offer their TV services without the need of a satellite dish. This should give sky further reach to an extra 6 Million customers across Europe. Some people struggle to receive their services due to location or type of building that they live in. Although it seems pretty good, you then have to make sure your area is covered for fast enough broadband to surf the net and use the TV services. - Source

Bye Bye Discovery?

Okay, so as we saw earlier, discovery channels may be leaving Now TV and Sky - Here. It looks like Sky in general could lose 13 channels by the broadcaster :(

This comes after claims from Discovery that Sky are refusing to pay them a fair price. Apparently Sky are paying less now, than they did 10 years ago, regardless of growing viewing figures of 20%+

So far it looks like neither Sky or Discovery want to back down. With a deadline date of 31st January we could be waving goodbye to some decent channels. - Source

So losing discovery channels and getting price hikes on line rental Not sounding great for the Sky customer right now :(

More info on upcoming changes - Here

Channels under threat are:
Animal Planet
Discovery HD
Discovery History
Discovery Home & Health
Discovery Science
Discovery Shed
Discovery Turbo
DMAX
Eurosport1
Eurosport2
Investigation Discovery
Quest
TLC

Can I leave Sky because of this?
As this is such a big change to subscribers, it could mean you could get out of your contract, due to it not being what you signed up to. I'll keep an eye out for any announcements. Usually Ofcom will have some input regarding these sort of things

This is just nonsense. They pay an obscene amount of money so that they can televise useless millionaires kick a ball around. Discovery is a superb selection of channels, but they don't have enough money to pay a fair price because they overpay for football.

Discovery channels have the choice of going free-to-air and then they won't need to beg for scraps from Sky. They could get on Freeview too ;)

Discovery used to make more programmes 10-20 years ago.

I wonder what their stats are on reruns now compared to 2007?

How do you know Discovery are charging them a fair price? They might be being extorted like Sky tried to extort Virgin for The Atlantic Channel.

Wonder how much i can get knockedvoff my bill for this if i say i wanna leave if they refuse

Was not too fussed until I saw that Eurosport is part of the Discovery package. I have Sky for Sports and ease of Catch-Up use... everything else is on Netflix or Amazon I find...

I can't remember the last time I watched Discovery channel or any of these! I won't even notice these channels are gone, and I expect the majority of people won't either!

But you are paying for them. That means you are paying the same for less. Don't you think you should be paying less?

If you are in contract then you won't get anything off

Don't know about anyone else but I don't watch none of those channels but I'll certainly be using it to my advantage to get my already dirt cheap bill reduced :)

Been in contract since October, just cancelled free of charge.

For me Discovery network is one of the few channels I watch.
Yes plenty of repeats and that stupid shaving commercial during the night.
That said they still produce original content and will be sadly missed.
But the way people view broadcasts has changed with the advent of Netflix and Amazon Prime as examples.
May be this is the route for them to take?

Discovery is great, and Eurosport is far better than Sky Sports. Eurosport's winter coverage is almost unrivalled, if they had the X Games coverage it would be complete. I find BT Sport to be improved as well with content from an increasing variety of sports, but shame that BT is about to start charging for it a month before the Champions League final.

As much of a football fan as I am, you're absolutely spot on there and completely agree!

What I've read on the SkyQ forums is you can end your contract if Sky reduce the channels, the contract isn't the same as the old Sky box, only SkyQ

My two favourite channels are Discovery HD and History, if we do lose these channels then I'll be seriously thinking what's the point !

Where did you hear this? I upgraded to sky q last month and nothing said then. Concerned I'll lose my F1 channel.

Hi....what reason did you give them to cancel??.....was it that they were removing Discovery channels also they are putting prices up for telephone and broadband???......thank you

In the case of Discovery they have paid £1 billion to get the olympics so that's why they are struggling. More than just football in that but it's still a really stupid amount of money. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2017/01/25/discovery-goes-war-sky-channel-fees-blackout-threat/

So they should get no money atall from someone (as they'd have to drop the deals with Virgin as well) and just live off advertising? Yeah right.

It was always good for Tour De France coverage. We're can it now be seen Virgin Media. let's hope it's not removed from the Sky platform.

So can you leave sky even though your in a contract ?

Good. Hopefully more TV channels leave too and they all group together and come up with a joint effort to rival sky and virgin. It's about time some competition came along that was good enough to make sky and virgin lower prices.

I'd jump on the cancellation wagon. Then after two days. Click on the rejoin sky link( left wishing last 12 months) because your sky is in cancellation mode they will offer 65% off and 100 bill credit. It may suit some, I'm not promoting sky! Just make it work

You think Discovery don't make money?
You might want to see how much that company makes... In 2015 revenue - $6,394 million an increase of $129 million, or 2%, compared to the prior year

I received this by live chat, trying to wriggle out of it 49 Will the Service change? The Service may change, as it is variable. This means that we can change programming, change or withdraw any Option or Additional TV Service, and change, withdraw or interrupt the Channels you receive in your Service. Your chosen Option may offer you a variety of Channels which are broadcast by various broadcasters, including Sky. Although we aim to provide Channels that cover a wide range of interests, unfortunately we cannot guarantee the availability of any particular Channel or programme

They tried this with me, but their terms and conditions clearly state that you can cancel without penalty if they change any of the tv services and it causes you a material disadvantage.

I cancelled my contract earlier on without penalty and I had 9 months to go on the minimum period as well.

Just need to find the money for a cheap Humax HDR-1000S now so I can drop my 2TB drive in to it :)

If Discovery do leave Sky permanently that's it for Sky as far as I'm concerned (after 25 years) First I saw of this threat was a scrolling banner they were showing during a break on TLC yesturday.

Been toying with the idea for a while now anyway, we've been struggling with SkyQ since launch and it seems the problems are getting worse as time goes on with the mini boxes requiring a power cycle and around a 10-20min wait until they reconnect every other day. That's only one of a very long list of Q Gremlins. Another thing that annoys me is the adds for new customers offering vouchers, free TV's and free Installation/Box @ £25pm - but as an existing customer, paying nearly three times that per month I had to haggle like Mike Brewer for Q and three mini boxes and still ended up shelling out an arm and a leg.

Thankfully I live in a cabled area so all is not lost.

Pretty disgusted with sky. Yet bigger price for less product. We should all go to Virgin Tv. Will keep leave if this is not resolve. Great **** Murdoch

Not all of us can go to virgin as no cable in the area so choice of sky or BT both theiving gits . I've emailed sky asking what discount I'll get I will be looking at what I can do as I watch discovery channels a lot very disappointed with sky

Why is it mental? It's still pretty much unrivalled.
