Sky Viewing Card Help

Recently obtained a Sky Digibox, for bedroom without digital tv, but it had no matching/paired viewing card.

Now, my ignorant assumption was I could use spare viewing card I had lieing around and match it up.

Not so, it's a subscription viewing card and cannot be "made" into a "Free To View" viewing card.

Kind of absurd considering if anyone cancels a Sky subscription their old subscription viewing card becomes an FTV viewing card.

The Sky call centre was quite adamant on this and refused to budge trying to push me to their sales and spend £20 on a new card, despite having one in my bloody hand.

Another example of ridiculous systems overriding common sense.

It seems the spare viewing card I had was on an old old account over 2 years old since the subs on it was cancelled meaning the card is permanently disabled and they refuse to reactivate it no matter what insisting the only way was to spend £20 on a new card etc.

Sky Rip off galore.

Today's lesson: never seperate a viewing card from it's paired Sky Digibox.

If your card is dark blue with a yellow house on it, then just leave it in your connected and switched on ( or standby ) Sky receiver for a day or two, it should open automatically, if it is the old light blue card, it will never open.

It will open Channel 4, all of the Channel 5's and Sky 3, no card required for any other free stuff.;-)
#3
Erm, HOW?

How will it "just open"?

Sky told me this card is permanently disabled, forever and ever.. etc.

Cards require a " keep alive " signal to keep them active.

Yours has been out of a connected Sky Box for some time so has missed the signals.

However by contacting Sky, you may well have given it the kiss of death, and they may just have deactivated it.

It's worth a try, doesn't cost anything.

i had to pair it so had to call sky, doh lol

no harm in trying as you say, we'll see what happens.

PS: If anyone knows where to get cheap Sky Viewing Cards please let me know, I can't find cheaper than £20.

I had this problem too, I managed to get round it by connecting the sky box as normal AND to the phoneline then forcing a software update on the sky box and within a couple of hours it was active, To force an update simply unplug the box from the mains then, while holding the backup button on the box, plug it back in, wait till all four lights come on, then release the button.
Hope this helps.

Also see here as it confirms what Inactive says. http://www.howtomendit.com/answers.php?id=69327

Interesting, so the viewing card, esentially via the sky digibox telephone updates etc, will reactivate the card?

You didn't have to " pair it ", any card will work in any box as long as it is alive and ex-subscription, as long as Sky havn't deactivated it.

You may find a Sky Card on offer on AVForums For Sale section from time to time.

No need to connect phone line, I have never connected a Sky Box to a phone line, it isn't necessary.

Updates are actually carried out over the air I just played it safe by connecting phoneline too! Thinking about it logically though i cant see the phoneline making a nads difference!

Well right now, the digibox is plugged in with the card in it, no sat feed, nothing, does it need the sat feed so it can software update to make the card work?

Yes, it will do nothing without the sat feed, I did say " connected ".. ;-)

It may not need a software update, the card may well open without an update.

It will auto update the software eventually if left connected anyway.

ok, the plan is:

card in powered digibox, wait till thurs or so, test

if kaput:
card in powered + sat fed digibox over night (can't do all day for now) until sat

if still kaput:
card in powered + sat fed digibox overnight with phone line, although this is a pain in the **** to do and might entice me to pay the miserable £20.

Thanks Guys

It will do nothing without a sat feed, so that is a waste of time, it may need leaving in the connected Sky Box for up to 2 days solid before opening, it depends how long it has been off for.

Connecting to the telephone line will not make a scrap of difference.

Good luck.
#15
Right then, it'll mean annoying a housemate but i'll leave it with the sat feed

What does the sat feed/software update do to the card?

Sky send a " keep alive " signal to all cards via the sat feed, without the feed the card will go in to a temporary dead state.

The software isn't directly related to this, however it does need an update signal as well.

Let us know how things go.

Duplicate post, slow server.

There must be millions of cards though, i take it if they really disabled my card it won't be on that keep alive list?
that must take a while to cycle through, strange system though, why not just keep the cards active all the time, why the inactive function? something to do with sky viewing abroad?

Not sure why, it is just Sky, nothing to do with viewing abroad, they work fine abroad, as long as they are connected to a suitable dish.

If they took the card details from you, then they may have deactivated it, if you didn't give them the card details, then you are fairly safe.

I gave them the card number :?

Whoops, not a good idea, you will just need to wait and see if it kicks in or not.
#22
If you spoke to a normal cust service advisor they will not have the power to action a block fully on your card as they are done by the viewing card's department only, (not even a supervisor can do it) I haven't tried a forced software download for some time but i am aware that SKY now have to action the signal to release the update from their end you can still go through the motions of doing the forced download but i don't think it will update now.

If the card is in a box that it has not been paired to it will show an error message of "this is the wrong card for this set top box" but should allow you to veiw free to air chans once the card is live again.(not active- just live)

Three 3days in an active and plugged in digibox with sat feed.

nada

zilch

nowt

Still giving me unencrypted channels only.

Ordered a card for £20 and learned two lessons, to write initials , street number and post code on cards in case and never to remove working cards from a digibox, ever

I wonder why it died though.
#24
the only way to activate your old card would be to re subscribe on it, then pair the cart to the box then to do the software update, but even then if you cancelled the subscription after the 1 month, only the unencrypted chans will come through, pretty pointles as this would prob's have cost more with a lesser outcome.
sorry we were of no help xx
#25
Sorry to hear the bad news, I am still convinced it was because you gave Sky the card number, I have never had a Sky Card that has not opened up after a couple of days of full connection.

Another £20 in to the coffers of the Murdoch money making machine.. ;-)

£20 viewing card I ordered on weekend arrive all working etc,

I'll have a 4th box coming my way next year when parents upgrade to Sky+ most likely or they cancel and renew and I can use up last feed on quad lnb, hope this problem doesn't come up again.

Glad you are sorted.;-)

It's making me wonder if i should write down the initials, street number and post code of the person every viewing card is or was registered to, so if it does go kaput in future they'll see it on their records and reactivate or send me a new one.

Otherwise it looks like Sky Freesat seems to have an extortion racket going forcing people to pay £20 every 18-36months to get a new Freesat viewing card.
#29
No, I think you were just unlucky, it hasn't ever happened to me, just remember to put your card/s in an active Sky Receiver from time to time.

I still reckon that by giving Sky the card details they switched it off permanently, I never ever ring Sky..;-)
