I'm currently with Virgin Media, on their basic TV package (BB and Telephone via them too) and I was thinking about upgrading to their V+ service for the HD content. I'm not especially interested in pausing live TV and all that jazz, its purely because I want to make the most of the new HDTV I've bought.

Is the upgrade worth it for the HD content alone? I can't find much information on what content is broadcast in HD with either package, is it just on-demand stuff or are there dedicated HD channels? What about getting terrestrial channels in HD?

I cant speak for virgin but sky have dedicated HD channels, all the movie channels have sperate HD channel as do most of the sports as well as sky 1 channel 4 and BBC have their own HD channel (however this does not mimic whats on either BBC 1 or 2, its usually the HD preview they have on.

IMO It's worth upgrading to a V+ box with Virgin for the recording facilities alone - I don't tend to watch much 'live' TV now, and just skip through the adverts during playback. I don't think it's worth upgrading purely for HD though - there simply isn't enough content to justify it. Currently there is only BBC HD available (ITV is to be added soon), which broadcasts for about 5 hours per day, and a small amount of on demand content.

If you don't want to pay the Sky HD subscription fee (just under a tenner a month), then Freesat would be your best bet for terrestrial HD.

Thanks, rep for that! seems like theres quite a bit on sky but I'm guessing you need one of the highest packages for all the movies?

Awesome advice, thats what I was looking for. I don't watch much live tv either - I can get most of the must-have shows elsewhere and watch them whenever I like, so the recording stuff is a nice add on, but not important. I'll look in to freesat.

v good question....... anyone know if you have to have the full package to get the HD channels? I cant see them offering HD subscription and getting all the HD movie channels if you dont subscribe to the regular movie channels in the first place.

btw OP if you really wanna make the most of your HD TV, get a blu ray player.
[mod]#11
I'm not sure about the package as i have the full one. But i can't see them giving away the HD movies if it's not part of your standard package. Bit of a diddle really.

Would be good if someone could confirm because if they do then i'll cancel normal movies. :)

when the prices drop I might, at the moment they're a bit expensive - they'll be £30 like DVD players before long!

got the xbox hooked up last night though, messed myself when I played COD4 in HD

and sports........

"hello scottish/indian sky call centre worker, I'd like to cancel my sky subscription please, yes I ralised I'm tied into a 12 month HD contract, I shall pay the £10 for that each month providing I still recieve those channels" - might be worth looking at the small print

Wait until you play a driving game, grid etc shiney car graphics look a lot better when rendered than a polygonal bloke with a gun.

I advise putting a binbag on your chair for the day you come to watch a disney pixar film on 1080p @ 24fps :whistling:

Saturday 14th march..... fancy some online co-op at 2am? it'll scare you more than the guy who played doom3 (look him up on youtube  )

You will only get the HD channels that you subscribe to on the normal sky package. To enjoy the benefit of SkyHD you need the full package really. The sport is good and I love American Chopper on DiscoveryHD..
It's definately worth the £10 per month on the full package..

I was going to stick PGR4 on last night but TBH after spending 3 hours after work building the new TV unit, disconnecting all the cables on my hi-fi and AV gear, moving the old TV (how F'ing heavy are CRT's?!) reconnecting all the cables in some sort of tidy and organised way and then clearing up all the mess, I just played what was in the drive for 10mins before going to bed! :-D

freesat boxes look at start at about £100, which is how much I can get V+ for (plus £5 a month on my subscription) so it might actually work out the same - oh and I'd need a external antenna for freesat, which I don't have!
