Sky - What are the options?

Hi All

I am sure this has been discussed many times.

I have a problem with my Sky plus and they want to charge me to have it fixed. I have been a top paying customer for 15 years :-(

Anyway, I use Sky plus. We don't have cable in the village.

What options are out there that are as easy to use as Sky plus ( if any at all )

Thanks

It is all up to what you want.

If you don't use sky sports or sky movies then freesat is a very good choice.
If you do use the Sky premium channels then get a cheap sky + box from somwhere and swop it out.

Just pay the £65 to have it fixed. which in raelity means replaced, this gets you either 3 or 6 months warranty and if anything goes werong they'll sort it out again free this time
or upgrade from the sky+ to sky+ HD and get a years warranty free of charge
But you have to buy the box so unless you want HD it's cheaper to pay the £65

ring Sky
tell them you are cancelling your contract because you don't want to pay them to fix the box
they will then send an engineer for free

this has always worked for me

Or ditch Sky and get a Freeview PVR, no monthly charges to the Murdoch empire.

pretty much everyone I know has tried this successfully with sky when theyve had problems. Just say you want to cancel your contract and switch to someone else and the customer service rep will jump at the chance to keep you with sky any way he/she can. as already said, they should send over an engineer for free if you really press the matter that your a loyal customer etc etc

Or, if you don't want to risk cancelling (they ocassionaly call your bluff and actually cut you off) ask to reduce your current subscription down to a single mix (about £16p.m.) as it's pointless paying for all of the channels if you can't watch them properly.... this is usually persuades them to offer a free repair/replacement :)

Good Good Thanks all...

Some questions....

We pay but never watch sports/movies..... Do people find freesat covers most other channels? Can you get a PVR version and how good is the channel guide?

Thanks

You can also get a HD version too. I'm not sure about the EPG, but the choice of channels is more comparable to Freeview the Sky.

even if you do cancel just sign back up the next week and they will send a new box out, only thing is you have to take another 12 month contract..
