Hi everyone.
I am seriously considering Skype as we make a lot of international calls and this would save us some money.
It would only be used for these calls and we would keep our existing line for uk calls.

Has anyone had any experiance with Skype

How does it work ? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
Can you recommend any handsets. If it could double as a Skype Phone and land line phone that would be ideal, but would like to know what is available.

Thanks :)

just get a cheap mic and either use your existing speakers or get a headset. If the other side has a computer then if they join skpye calls are free, calls to international land line are very affordable. to call landlines you need to add credit to your account, do this with quidco or similar cashback site and get cash back. This also applies to any topups you do subsequently. We use it all the time it is very reliable and easy to use.

I have the single handset version of this Philips made one, work great for me.
The only thing I don't like about it is, that one has to dial 00442071231234 to dial a UK number. Notice that on these budget phones the DECT base station has to be connected to the computer's USB port. The computer obviously has to be switched on to make Skype calls. You can also connect it to a BT line, but don't have to.

Did you do a price comparison between the various providers? Skype is far from being the best priced solution. Check out VoipBuster.

The only reason I use Skype is that 99% of my customers are using it and it is actually a very convenient service. For me Skype has almost entirely replaced Live Messenger/ICQ/AOL IM.

Remember that Skype phones don't usuly work with std. VOIP providers and the other way around. So before spending money, do a bit of reading here.

Any headset will do. If your laptop has an in-built microphone and speakers that will quite often work surprisingly well too. Some of my customers use the microphone built into their webcams.

This Linksys adapter
will allow you to use any corded/cordless phone with a VOIP service of your choice, excluding Skype that is of course.
I like the Linksys adapter, since it plugs directly into your broadband router. Connect it to a 4 handset Cordless DECT phone system and you have BT/Voip phone access throughout the house, without the need for the computer to be left on.
