Sleep problems - any had this and know the cause/cure?!

For as long as I can remember, I've had incredibly bad problems with sleep! It's got to a point now that it happens at least once each night and it's very upsetting and scary! Problems include:
Waking up screaming - not just a short shout, but a full on, high pitched, blood curdling scream and thinking that my boyfriend is screaming in my ear when in fact he's trying to calm me down (something I realise once I'm awake)!
Thinking there's a spider(s) on/near me and jumping out of bed trying to get them off me.
Having 30+ different terrifying nightmares just as I fall asleep one after another. I'm able to stay awake for around 5 seconds between each but I cannot stay awake and it goes on for hours. Nightmares worse than any horror film I have ever seen and I'm shocked my mind even imagines these things!
Waking up in a rage so bad I slam doors and fear I may do something horrible!
Laughing/talking all night and searching for things.

Has anyone had anything like this and know what it is/had it sorted?
Most of the time it is quite funny as my boyfriend just takes the P out of me 'cos some of the stuff I come out with is hilarious but the nightmares etc are absolutely awful!!

I've started having awful dreams, just hideous. And not just one bad one, there are about 4 in a row in one night.
For me, it's stress so hopefully it'll ease off when things improve.
Maybe go to your doc and talk things through with them.

Linky ------- Here we go, its to do with epilepsy as it can be a pre curser to siezures i think. He got checked out and doc said there was nothing he could do, but people on the link have been prescibed stuff. It is american, but all is help i guess....

I suffer from similar problems and have been looking on the internet for a cure. I think you suffer from night terror.
#5
NIght terrors??

It's not uncommon in kids but as you're not a kid, you should definitely see your doc for referral to a sleep specialist.

No, it's not funny re suffering this problem. I never had it but my sister did when she was in her teens. Back in the day, the answer was for me to go and sleep with her!

Thanks for this but I'm not sure it's anything epilepsy related.. hopefully anyway!

I did think this, but it's not normally people and I don't ever feel like I'm being pinned down etc which I thought night terrors were. It's so varied... it's never one recurring thing which is what's odd!
Edit: just read an article on night terrors that say people often see snakes/spiders etc and are unable to be woken up which is more like what I get. It's always spiders rather than rats/snakes etc as I'm not scared of these so I just thought I was dreaming of what I'm scared of?!

No, night terrors are as described! Terrors.

You may be thinking of recurrent nightmares, which are also common in childhood - but they don't have to be a pinned down thing either. Mine was that my dad was being mauled to death by a bear on the other side of a fire in a cave! I never told anyone and the nightmare went away eventually.

Genuinely, I would say to get specialist help.

Having read a few message boards on night terrors, it does sound very faimliar (the screaming, thinking things are in the room etc) so it may be that. It's only become more obvious since moving in with my boyfriend who reminds me of what happened in the night as otherwise I don't remember, but I think it's been happening for years as friends have said I used to shout at them! Apparently I screamed at one of them to get me a drink and they were terrified so went and got one - when they got back, I was fast asleep but had no recollection of it happening in the morning!

Yes... maybe I could go get chased by a man in a mask, dripping with blood from his neck and hands... then when he catches me, I'll look forward to him holding a gun to my head whilst he sexually attacks me. Thanks for your input.

Get a job where you have to work night shifts. It exhausts me so much I don't wake up for anything.

OMG, that sounds almost identical to one I have, except he is chasing me up the stairs with a knife in his hands and catches me by the ankle and then attacks me.
Also family dying, being mauled, drowning, pain, distress, panic, fire etc etc.
Go see your GP if you don't know what is causing them, no harm in just talking to them about it.

So there's something wrong with seeing if this happens to lots of people? Lolwut!
This isn't something that causes me any harm but has been happening more and more recently. If I want to ask if others have the same problem (which they do, feel free to read this thread), then I will.

Harm or not it's hardly normal to be waking up pretty much everynight screaming or having very vivid nightmares that make you upset.

Hence why if something like this was happening to me on a regular occurance I would be going to see a specialist. As for airing the situation I would have signed up and explained the issue on a more appropriate forum rather than one that is primarily dedicated to deals.

lolwut brah.

These things are usually related to a mix of things eg some current stressfull situations / previous unresolved issues in the past that you mull over at nighttime dreaming , which turn into the nightmares you are having .
Usually it's work related , but you mentioned you just moved in with BF , so the change in your personal situation could of triggered something of deep down in the subconscious .
If this hasn't resolved itself sooner rather than later , I would go to GP as a starting point and then be reffered accordingly eg sleep disorders , counciling etc . The minimum this can cause is a lack of sleep , which in it's self has an effect on you / work and make things diffucult . Besides the fact of the disturbing content which can make you worry / paranoid , I would really suggest go and get help ;
Also someone brought up diet - a change in diet/ certain items of food / drink especially a couple of hours before sleep can have an effect Try as much as possible , without moving out of BF place , to go back to the same patterns etc you had before this change , but if this has been done / not possible , go and see GP .

i used to have issues like this, i used to be scared to go back to sleep after them, they were so real sometimes, my husband can usually tell now but my noise and moving etc. i do scream and yell a lot.

Mine started after a trauma. it took about 12-14 years to generally settle, and i still occasionally get them. i saw a counselor, who suggested i try to control the dream, ie if its the same dream, you know what to expect so change the outcome by doing something different in the dream, I slowly learned to confront the dreams in a way.
Another issue i found, i am not sure if it is a result of trying to control the dream and my making myself a little conscious in my dream, is that i started to suffer mild sleep paralysis basically i know i am in a dream, but my body cant seem to wake, and i am sort of stuck in the dream.

Night terrors are generally linked to underlying psychological trauma aren't they? OP should probably look at therapy to unearth what it is that is causing them such issues.

Another source could be the OP's diabetes.
