Hi,
Can anybody recommend a (preferably free!) programme to download to speed my laptop up.
I have already defragged, run disk cleaner, used Ccleaner, ran AVG 9.0 and removed old/unused programmes through the control panel but it doesn't seem to matter what I do it's still slow.
I'm not sure of the full spec of my laptop but it's a Compaq Presario C300.

Thanks for any help...

Don't fancy taking it apart incase I thoroughly b***er it up. I have hoovered the vents etc and it's not that noisy, fan-wise.

go to Run then type MSCONFIG and hit enter

On the start up tab untick any applications that you don't need when you turn your laptop on. (basically everything apart from your anti virus etc.)

edit.

Also try increasing your pagefile and changing your performance settings (run - sysdm.cpl - advanced - settings etc)

I would check if you have any adaware or spyware

Download for free spybot search and destroy here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Also 1gb on xp i fairly good and should be fine but i upgraded mine to 2gb and you can certainly tell the difference.

I've used SpyBot in the past and it didn't seem to make much difference but I'll give it another go. Can you explain to a simpleton how to upgrade my RAM?

turn off your laptop
turn your laptop upside down
locate the hatch where the ram is
unscrew the 1 or 2 little screws
locate the ram module pull the side clips out and it will pop up and slide out
note down the details of the ram such as PC5300....ect

or better still goto crucial.co.uk type your laptop model number in and they will find you the best suited ram for your laptop.

But explain how slow your laptop is? and what are you doing for it to go slow? just general browsing?

Well, initially it took ages to start up (around 9-10 minutes) to start using anything, even moving the cursor. But as above, I've just turned off some start up programmes (mobile driver, MSN messenger etc) so it starts quicker but when using it for general browsing , the pages take longer to load than they used to and opening any programmes for word processing etc it takes longer then it used to as well.

OK, Crucial.com/uk recommends I get one of these http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=81D035BEA5CA7304
Would this be the cheapest place to get a set?

I tell you another handy program that boosts startup process dramatically.

microsoft bootvis found here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/BootVis.shtml

run this then in the main program window click the Trace tab then optimize system. Works a treat

You need just 1gb and you need to take the ram covery off the bottom of the laptop and see if you have a spare slot to put it in.

Or buy that kit and flog the one you have in your laptop on ebay for £20 or so. Depending if its faulty or not mind!

Upgrade ram, turn off everything uncessesary, get rid of anything that makes it look pretty (Like Vista skins etc), remove unwated start up programs, scan for spyware/viruses/trojans, disk clean and defrag, then restart. Might make a difference!
