I always have this problem each year all of my plants get attacked by snails and slugs, I usually put slug pellets down and leave it at that, but I now have a dog and know they are poisonous to animals so I have no idea what to do. I was thinking of getting some copper tape off ebay and putting it around my planters and pots, but is there anything I can do for the plants which are in the ground. My lavender has lots of slug trails over it and my fuchsias are already being eaten even though they've only been in the ground for 1 day! I've heard beer in containers are suppose to be good, poundland has 2 traps for £1 that you put bait in and they can't get out..

What have people found most effective to get rid of them? I've spent too much time and effort for all my plants to be killed in a week ='[

I was out the other night with my OH hunting for the bliters and pouring salt on them.. they make a popping bubbling sound when you do it its horrible.. =O but I could be out one night and kill 20 of them, and over night another 5000 will be born so it just seems pointless.
I'll get some of the poundland traps today, if they don't work well its only £1 spent! Can get some cheapo beer from Tesco or Asda too =]

I've also heard of broken egg shells have you tried this and does it really stop them from going over them?

And yeah I know about the slugs being poisonous to dogs thats another reason I want to get rid of them! I heard lots of dogs die each summer due to the slugs and snails.. my Cassie would eat anything she sees so I have to be really carefull!

I didnt know anything about them being poisonous to dogs until I seen a thing in the paper the other day warning dog owners against slug season, I thought it was a joke at first.

As you said even if the traps from poundland dont work what have you got to lose its only a pound.

Wish ya luck.

We get problems with slugs at this time of year, they get into my kitchen, our houses are years old and the foundations are all cracked(we have bees and wasps that nest in the walls too). Usually we just pick them up on the shovel and throw them back outside, I just couldn't bring myself to put salt on them lol.

I hate them, they just do no good what so ever! and each year we seem to get even more of them. I've found copper tape on ebay 4meter for £3 or 12meter for £7 so I think I'll get some. I'll also try the beer traps, and any egg shells that I go to throw away I'll put around my newly planted plants.

The garden behind us planted ivy around their tree and the tree is just covered in the stuff, all of the slugs are coming from there I wish I could chop it down >:[

Would normal foil do the same thing as copper tape?

Yep _ I would go with the old ring of salt round the planters...

Pity you cant eat em like the lass with the snail infestation...

Gotta say my mum swears by this method.

Though she saves all her egg shells and cooks them until they are rock hard - and then shatters them before sprinkling over the plants... Animals and Slugs hate it!
