Smokers aged nine in UK’s poorest town

It sickens me to the bone to think that some parents can let their children even dare go near a cig, nevermind smoke it.

QUOTE- like one lad who got hooked aged three because his grandparents thought it was FUNNY to give him fags. !
Yes it might be britains most deprived town, but that doesnt stop them being good parents!

Absolutely disgusting!

I see some lad whose chin was barely above the handle bars on his bike cycling along with a ciggie in his mouth, totally shocking. My parents would have had my head of my shoulders, so to speak, if I did that.

At least get off the bike and smoke it...lol Seriously, took me until I was 18 before I could light up in front of my Dad and even then he gave me an ear bashing and told me to put it out.

IM from the next valley over From Merthyr tydfil and let me tell you its not that bad over there, yes you see kids ( 12 +) smoking but you will see that in any town.
Merthyr has had millions of pounds spent on regeneration, employment, health care over the last 20 years. it is a nice town, they have some major our of town shopping areas, new state of the art hospital, cinema, hotels, you name it they have it.
and the comment at the bottom about a guy still smoking after 5 heart attacks its utter rubbish i know the guy and his family. he had one 4 years ago, yet can run 20 miles UP a mountain yet is registered as disabled. dont beleive everything you read in the Sun!

99.9% of people agree and know that children smoking is bad. But stories like this serve nothing more than provoke outrage with the rest of the country. It is not the norm, just as murderers and burglars are not the norm in society; but in a selection of circa 60m people there are bound to be the 0.00001% who think this is acceptable.
Yes you might see kids as young as 12 smoking, but you saw kids that age smoking when I was young too. It's nothing new.
I am not disagreeing it's appalling but before getting outraged about it just take a step back and don't buy into the hype and frenzy that's ultimately indented to sell newspapers or magazines and is not really reality!

But there is a reason for that, Maggie decided when she closed the mines that it would help the jobless figures if those without jobs went on to Incapacity Benefit.

It has just continued on through generations.

That old chestnut again. Blame a government for a policy 30 years ago for two generations of dole bludgers.

They should have taken Tebbits advice and got on their bikes :p

i smoked when i was 8. My mum didn't have a clue till an older boy got me to steal my mum's cigarettes. She caught me and made me smoke an entire cigarette. I have never touched them since.
