Time to make the garden foxproof then. If you don't have foxes now, you will when the chickens arrive.
Would love to have chickens but they need caring for if you are ever away from home and I thats the bit I can't guarantee.

I have some really nice neighbours and family who will help out if I need to go away.

Foxes are the only issue, I will have to make the garden into a fortress.

we have chickens 6 female and 1 male. We work out with food they cost us between the 7 of them 80p per week. Plus they eat all the food and fruit and yogurts etc left over.
They are fantastic pets.

ebay. we drove to a farm which was about 30 mins away. we bought 12 fertile eggs and couldn't believe it when 11 hatched. Some we gave to my brother however the ones he got were all male so he had to get rid of them as they were too noisy. Some went to live on my dads friends farm.

Some of our boys we had to get rid of as they were really visious :? one especially. He would chace you around the garden and bite you, when he did it to my 2/3 year old i knew it was time for him to go.

We have then had more chicks off the ones we have now but only a few. The last time we did it ended up in disaster as another one of the female got into the 3 babies and killed two of them, maybe through jealousy? The other one we found dead the next day, maybe through shock

Last week 'Foxy' got 2 of my neighbour's ducks and dropped one of the bodies in my garden, ironically whilst we and they had been to another neighbour's funeral. I was all ready to start plucking but did the decent thing and returned the corpse. Keep yours safe as the foxes are rather peckish at the moment.

Need to check that the garden fencing is adequate as well I would have thought. A coop on its own is surely going to be an easy target for foxes.
I have not kept chickens myself but a friend who once had 25 geese is down to just one. If a fox thinks you are providing an easy meal they will be regular visitors.

My dad has mentioned fencing, I will make the garden in to a fortress

I have seen a nice coop and have emailed the guy because he lives locally.

The only hiccup is that my fella is having major surgery on his mouth on 1st June, so it depends how well he is after surgery.

I have heard of people holding the odd nail or screw in their mouth but never an entire fence. Shouldn't make a difference :w00t:

I might have to nurse him, so I won't be able to sort the chicken's out as well.

They might cheer him up though.
