So I got my new phone.....................

.

My new phone arrived yesterday from Vodafone, which I duly inserted the battery and charged and plonked in the sim. "No service." Not to worry I thought. Id received a text on my O2 phone saying the number would go live from 4pm today.

This morning, its still "No service". I just made a call on my iPhone, but just tried to make another and now have "No service" on this as well.

Whenever Ive ported numbers before, both have been active at the same time.

So...... apart from my spare mobile (which nobody knows the number!), I'm without a phone to receive calls. What a cock up.

Thanks O2 and Vodafone. No doubt Im being charged by both for today too!

Is this normal with O2 / Voda?

Oh dear Guv, I'm sure it will sort itself, if you got twitter, go through there for customer services on the vodafone channel. Always get a quick reply from the guys.

I never port a number leaves them more chance to cock it up or whatever.

Would ask you if you like your new desire but your probably resenting it right now.

Last year T-mobile and Orange managed to mess my switch over, they transferred my number bur got 1 digit wrong, both parties said it wasn't their fault, I was left without a number over x-mas. Ring them both and ask which number they sent/received.

Ive had this number for yonks... and my first number my littlun now has. (Though he's fed up of texts he keeps receiving! - From my first "Motorola flare" on one 2 one!)

Dunno how to use twitter! (Though did use it to get through to their web dept for this deal.)

Desire is fine. Reception is poor though!:p

I will not be amused! I need the damned thing working today!

The number porting sections of the network open up to each other between 10am and 4 pm, it can take a while for the backlog to filter through, but by now you should be working.
Have you been switching the phone on and off ? That can help.

If it's not working by, say 12, give them a ring.

I got through eventually to O2 (big queue with iphone user complaints Id imagine! She said O2 have already given the number to Voda. According to the way it works (and from past experience) the process starts and both phones should be active until one is finally switched off. Maybe things have changed and its fine to leave you without a working phone from both operators, but still be paying both!

On to Voda then, see what they say and if it's not working today they should give you credit for the time you're without service.

I was talking about the phone symbols. I noticed when I was out today I had H (for hdspa I assume). At home, nothing. Hopefully that doesnt mean its on 2G.

Mine had a 4 I swear the other day.

Well after all the problems I had with O2 and missed calls, I had hoped I'd put all that behind me.

All was ok for a few days until I had my first voice mail missed call. I rang voda to lodge the issue just in case of problems. Happened 3 more times at times I knew I had full signal and my phone was on. I managed to get a £30 credit added to the account after being told "we have a cell down in your work location". OK not a real problem I think... and thanks for the cash.

Last night I tried to make a few calls from home. Dial the number and "call failed". Happened several times even to other numbers. So I call again. Get told to take the battery out etc (the usual CS BS) and the problem still exists. So when I say I want to return it, I'm told I need to speak to the sales team I bought it from.

So this morning I ring from work.... get the same damned problem and once again end up needing to use my crappy T-Mobile sim in my iphone to get through.

The guy is receptive and tells me to register on their forums, which I do.

Got a call back this afternoon. I spoke about the Voda "sure call" thing and getting that for free (should be £50.) He did say I could cancel the contract if I wanted, or swap the phone. I suggested Id take the Samsung Galaxy S....... so thats being delivered tomorrow along with the call gadget. Bye bye Desire!

Have to admit, Voda where much better than O2 had been, though Im guessing the speel I gave made them appreciate I wasnt going to be messed about like I had with O2.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Inb4 my biatch.

Dunno. To be fair, they offered zero argument when I got through to the tech people about these problems, which really does prove to me its not isolated or imaginary. I dont think its so much me, but the 2 prime locations I use (ie work and home). And on the work location (I work near Waterloo Railway station), the guy even said that he doubted if any network didnt have problems at these locations during peak commuter times. That said, its happened at lunchtime and at home.. so it cant all be commuter congestion! But at least the signal sure(?) should eliminate any home problems for good.

Still.. I'll let you know what the Galaxy S is like. Ive not even seen one! (Though I did buy 2 Galaxy Portals on T-mobile last week.)

guv, did you have an iphone and then get a desire?

If so which one is the better in your opinion? positives and negatives?

I've got a 3g but undecided to go for a iphone 4 or htc desire

Truthfully, I still like my 3G iPhone. In fact I still use it with a cheapo T-Mobile sim I got last week with unlimited internet (plus minimal calls and texts) ideal to keep it alive.

My biggest gripe with the iPhone has always been iTunes, which I hate with a vengence. I use lots of phones...... but even more PCs than phones. Its not a good mixture for an iPhone, though its completely fine with a desire.

For sure the iphone is more intuitive to use and the apps are generally better. (eg I dont think some of the good Sat Nav software is available on Android.)

However, the Desire really is a nice phone. Its definitely much quicker than the iPhone.

Overall, i'd still go for a desire over an iPhone. The thought of iTunes just sent another shiver down my back!

I hear what you say about whether to go for a HTC desire or iPhone 4..... if it were me, I'd probably sit tight just a little bit longer. When you consider this contract (which has now turned into a Samsung Galaxy S), is costing me £360 over an 18 month period... the cost of an iPhone 4 and contract just makes it a complete no brainer for me. its nothing to do with "not being able to afford", but everything to do with "it just isnt any better and definitely I cant justify the enormous extra cost".

I know that probably hasnt helped in the slightest!:p

Cheers Mike.... I did (though obviously not for an iPhone 4)

It was a guy from there that sorted this for me. Top guy!

yeah not really but thanks for the reply :p i really like the iphone, but the big thing putting me off is the price, i can get a desire a hell of a lot cheaper than the iphone, and to be honest my 3g one is stil in great condition, apart from the back which i'm about to replace...i might just wait a few months and see what deals i can get

i think thats a wise choice. There will be a few new phones in the meantime. I doubt the iPhone will get any deals like the one that convinced me to buy my 3G (with a free 16GB iPod touch), but you never know.

Desire has in built sat nav, but just not that advanced yet. Sooner or later it will be on par with the iphone software.

Let me know what the Galaxy is like, might get the next gen one, just hope the build qualities like, I've always had good luck with Samsung phones.

oooh. Phone has arrived. The screen is very bright and colourful. much nicer than the desire. (Its HD too, so there will be other enhancements in that area also.

Build quality is good, better than expected. It still has that horrible spongey clipon back like the desite, but to be fair its actually nicer on the galaxy.

First impressions its definitely an improvement. I was worried id regret swapping, but I dont think thats likely.

The sure signal thingy arrived also which is just as well as I wasnt able to make a call on the desire again this morning!

Photos added as promised, though to be fair, you cannot realley see how much better the samsung screen is from these.
