So who took the plunge with the N95?

I just did and loving it. I've had nothing but Sony Ericssons for years since the T68m came out so i really fancied a change. Was using a K800 before this and by god its nice to get rid of those uncomfortable keys, sticky joystick and annoyingly loose camera lens.

So who else has got one and how do ya find it? Also i'd be interested to know what deal you got. I got it free on upgrade on O2 - 18mnth contract, £50pm 1200mins 1000texts

Thinking about getting this instead of my Sony Ericsson. Like you getting sick of the sticky joystick!!

What is the GPS like on the N95?
#2
havent tested the GPS out yet, too worried about data charges! Im not entirely sure what it entails like whether it connects via 3G to get the maps everytime, or whether a subscription is needed for the service. O2 unfortunately arent the best when it comes to data packages.

What SE were you thinking of upgrading to?
#3
with regards to GPS, the phone uses the SIRF STAR II chip which is the outdated model and by Nokia own admission is only "adequate" for driving, its meant more for walking apparently. take a long time to get an initial lock so ive heard after that tis not too too bad

with o2 your supplied with the UK maps on a 1 gig microsd card, BUT if you want turn by turn directions you will need to pay Nokia the tidy sum of £43 or £47 for a 3 year license (shorter licenses available)

when you connect to the GPS it will download maps unless you already have them, as you know data can rack up very very quickly when using stuff like this, o2 do do a 20mb data bolt on for £10 p/m....not a patch on web and walk but better than being hammered for going over a pathetic 512kb allowance...

The phones that I have seen come back to the shop have suffered from the generic symbian locking up issues and battery life, though I do say to people before they take it, do not expect this phone to last more than a day of usage on one charge, its something like 3 or 4 hours "talk/usage time"

There is a patch coming out soon so you can use TomTom on it ;)
#5
thanks for the info amino. I dont think i'll be using GPS much - if at all. I got mine from carphonewarehouse, not directly from O2, shame i didnt get a 1gb card with mine.

Just watched an ep of Family Guy on it - looks really crisp :)
#6
I've just been put off the N95. Thanks for the heads up guys.
Using the SSII chip in this phone is a mistake IMO.
#7
ps - dont download the maps onto your card via the phone, save on GPS charges and get them for free off the O2 website - then transfer over via USB cable or Bluetooth ;)

I've had the N95 for just over 2 weeks now, really pleased with it. The video quality is superb (for a phone) and it's definitely handy having the great camera.

My N91 was just short of 10 months old and almost completely dead (battery life plummetted to 3 hours, hard drive broken, Memory overloads every hour, broken hold switch), naturally I had 2 months left on my 12 month contract to serve.

I managed to get an early upgrade and got the handset for £20 on a £40 contract for 12 months. Thankfully this meant I could also remain on 02 with my current number. I was also trying to avoid being tied down for 18 months so I think I got a damn good deal.

do you have one Chris? How do you find the battery life?

the vid quality is excellent indeed, for playback and recording. Miles better than my K800 where the vid recording was absolutely terrible.

Bad news about the N91 i thought the hard drive was a very bad idea from the start. Flash memory and expandable memory is the only way to go with these kind of devices.

You got a blooming good deal there i wish i could've blagged them in to a 12 month rather than 18 months, but the gal told me that they only do 18 months on upgrades now. 12 months is supposedly being abolished soon.

Havent properly tested the camera yet but will do at the weekend. Any experience taking photos in the dark yet ie how good is the flash?
#11
Not got one myself, waiting til my contract expires in Aug before I upgrade. MIght be a few more on the cards by then (plus N95 will be free on my tariff)
#12
my contract was supposed to expire in July but they let me upgrade early which was nice

Theres some SE's that were announced yesterday - most notably the P1. Not sure when thats out

I agree, I knew before I even got the N91 that a hard drive was a ludicrous idea - it broke in 4 months! I just wanted a metal phone for once :)

The guy in Carphone Warehouse was astounded I'd managed to get an N91 off them on a 12 month contract so really I was amazed I got 12 months again on the N95. It took over 45 mins to sort out and they were telling every other customer that 18 months was all that was available now no matter what the handset.
I must have natural charm :p
#14
yeah you must have a natural blagging ability lol

Even though this phone has a metal look, it would've been nice for a bit of metal somwhere. Mind you, aluminium dents quite easily.

You got any probs with your slider yet, or anything? What apps do you have installed/recommend?
#15
I don't really have anything installed at the moment as I'm waiting for my 2gb MicroSD Ultra, which is still on bloody backorder at W2W.

I'm hoping to get K-Rally at some point, looks funky. Think there's a video app which plays lots more formats doing the rounds too. Word on the grapevine is that September will be the big month for N95 apps e.g. NGage compatibility etc.
#16
Ngage games would be wicked! K-Rally hmmm sounds familiar lol Can it be bought over at my-symbian.com or somewhere? Id be quite up for that. Used to have the V-Rally port on my P800 back in the day - pretty hard to control though

How are you finding the battery life on yours?
#17
This is K-Rally http://www.idreams.pl/product.php?idProduct=5
I've found the battery life fine... EXCEPT... if you leave a game on in the background like System Rush by accident then the battery seems to dive, almost as if you were still playing it. I suspect it's a firmware error, but I can't decide whether I want to risk upgrading it. Someone posted a thread about how to do it.
#18
Yeah i noticed that last night that the apps stays running...it'll take some getting used to remembering to close each down properly before leaving the phone alone.

Was thinking about upgrading my firmware later, think mine is on V10.0.18 (off the top of my head) and i saw that theres a V11 out now. I havent had any major lock ups yet though so i dont really know what the issues are with the firmware i've got and whats new in the latest firmware

What site do you go on for S60 info?

DOH, you could have got an extra 2000 mins (01,02,03 & 07 numbers) or 2000 UK texts (to use sat->mon) on top of your monthly allowance for the life of the contract if you had gotten it directly at o2 ....
#20
lol i struggle to think how im gonna use 1200 let alone 2000!!

Really need microSD now...my flatmate is just about to get rid of his Samsung E900 and said he'll give me his 1gb card which is excellent. Think that will prob do me tbh the battery will prob die soon after getting through a gigs worth of content

On the other hand, microSD's are quite cheap... would it really be worth my while buying an ultra II card? Would it make 'that' much of a difference?

#22

orange finally delivered the phone y'day..... havent had the chance to play around yet
thanks!
#24

dont know if the 95 comes with video encoding tools, if not I use pocketdivxencoder to encode stuff for my Orbit, play back smooth as silk and looks crisp as anything.

I think its a freeware/shareware app
#26
atm i use a converter called M3, presets for Sony Ericsson phones, but the K800 profile seemed to work fine for me. 325kbps video @ 25 FPS. Could prob use higher settings

What settings do you use Amino?

edit: whoops, you dont have an N95 do you lol
#27
what fileformat does the N95 play ?

im playing AVI files on my orbit, with pocketdivxencoder you can crank up the bitrate via a slide bar and set the screen res desired aswell as mess about with the FPS audio quality/video quality brightness etc.

when you launch it, there are presets for different devices (pda/smartphone/iriver/etc etc), choose your type and tweak to your hearts content.

an episode of lost takes around 144mb, purely becuase I set everything to give best playback.

This program should work to encode stuff to watch on the 95, dunno if its any better than out of the box stuff as I dont own a 95 :)
#28
for video files i think it plays 3gp mp4 and prob rmvb as real player is integrated. Also theres an app called Smartmovie which encodes files > avi's. Not sure if the 95 plays avi's natively, or just with Smartmovie player installed. I guess it shouldnt matter just as long as the res and bitrates are within a certain limit.

I am looking for a better app, something i can tweak and fiddle with. This sounds like it fits the bill

How bigs the screen on that Orbit you got?
#29
320x240 iirc only 65k colours on screen, but from what I understand this is limited by WM5, the phone can actually show 262k.

Not sure if its 100% true though.

I have to play my avis through a 3rd party app as WMP10 on the orbit is crap :(
#30
How many inches are we talking about Amino?...

the real player on the N95 is really good, full screen Family Guy looked crisp as.... oh and its got 16million colours :p :giggle:
#31
blah blah blah :p lol :)

according to this: http://www.gsmarena.com/o2_xda_orbit-1714.php

its 2.8 inches. Im guessing thats the corner to corner measurement.

theres also more 3rd party support for Windows based devices than symbian I think....theres me trying to get one back lol
#32
well i wont even mention the 5mpx cam and the VGA recording...oh..whoops, so i did :P

thats a pretty big ol screen there. Must look nice...they shouldve made it with more colours though. Seems a waste on a screen that big. Touchscreen is a lovely feature as well. Kinda wish the N95 had a touchscreen..but i can make do!

How does WM5 perform...slow/laggy at all??
#33
SIRF STAR II SIRF STAR II :p only kidding lol :)

on normal out the box settings it can be fractionally slow, but I have mine overclocked to 260mhz and it runs a dream (stable too!!) full screen worms is the nuts !!

having no keypad is not an issue, the device is very intuative and I can perform most tasks with one hand and thumb! (right handed)

I wish they would make one with a bettery camera, and use the 400mhz processor and give it a dreamy 16 million colour screen.

I would be so happy then lol.

Anyone been mental enough to use the Muvee editor?
I sat and played Snake on the TV output for at least a few minutes til I questioned what on earth I was doing...
