Someone please help! Computer problem

Just built new computer, well sort of. Running Gefore 8600GT 256MB, 4GB RAM (Platinum Corsair stuff), 4 x HD's, one optical, it's AM2 Dual core Athlon 2.7Ghz black edition

Basically when the computer warms up I'm getting massive amounts of artifacts in BIOS, the whole screen is flickering. Just managed to get into Vista and the screen is now stable but the driver crashed 3 times on start up. It can't be a driver issue as it's happening in BIOS/DOS. I've tried going through the settings to make sure nothing is overclocked, I can't find anything particulary hot inside.

Im guessing its a brand new graphics card, maybe its faulty do you have another graphics card you could test out
#2
try it withouyt the grahpics, then plug it in once the system is working

it does seem the gc is faulty ......
#3
Yep gcard problem.. is the fan on the gcard working?

Just put my 7600GT in and it's seems to be working fine. One thing I'll add is when setting up there was a port on the motherboard that was for the PCI-E x16, I plugged in the power and booted up the computer. After reading the manual it says to plug it in if you're using SLI (two cards), but I've only got the one I didn't fry it did I? The fan is working and it's running very cool. It doesn't say in the manual DO NOT plug in if only using one card else you'll fry it.

hmmm it shoudlt fry it when only using one ....... get the pc set up using the 7600 then turn off and retry with 8600 :)

try testing the 8600 in another pc, it may be a bios problem or the mobo doesnt accept it ????

How come its only running at 1Ghz?

could the main problem be the mother board? it dont like the 8600 & your CPU is running slow

the 8600GT is pretty much the same as the 7600 apart from the DX10? Turned down CPU as I thought something was getting too hot. AMD Cool&quiet would turn it down anyway.

no you didn't fry it, if it fits in the slot then then it should of been ok.
Could be drivers, is the graphics card compatible with the motherboard?
#11
you should have got an intel

serioulsy ........ use the 7600 but test the 8600 on another pc ..... if it runs fine then maybe its your mobo, read over the specs ......

98% sure its compatable, can't be drivers because they don't get loaded until I enter Vista, getting the artifacts in BIOS/DOS
#13
but the bios checks for it being compatible ???

the bios won't load unless it works ....... so its gotta be a error somewhere on the mb or gc so change the gc

quit with the jargon  im drunk ............ if the 7600 works and the 8600 doesn't then the 8600 doesn't work with your mobo....... i will check the 2 specs tomorrow (when sober) but for now, use the 7600...... not like your gonna use the extra oomph now is it ?

might be worth searching the net for others who have tried the same motherboard/graphics card/vista combination...could be a vista problem. how about unnofficial drivers, could be worth a shot.

isnt it easier to load vista using the 7600, make sure it works, then swap over the gc and see what happens ???

then we know if it is the gc causing it ?

Yep i agree, its definatly a graphics card issue, but hardware or software??? TBH if the gc fan is running, its got power then the most likely reason is a drivers issue.
it might be a known issue that other people have encountered with that motherboard/vista and 8600 GT(which make?), if so then its worth checking to see how they fixed it.

snap it in half and throw it in the bin, after seeing only an extra 20Mhz is there any point in putting in the 8600GT? ;-)

could try ringing ebuyer friday too see what they say ?

also google the mobo and gc combo and see what that comes up with, vista is known for throwing wobblies on hardware and software

Was it :-D im still on XP cos i reckon a Vista upgrade is overpriced for what it offers :whistling:
Just been googling, and people seem to get artefacts if the power supply is too low, just a thought :w00t:

i wouldnt go back to xp ......... vista runs so much quicker

i do have a high spec dual core though .......... if ya system is new then it will run vista well ...... its runs smoothly if ya chage the settings to what ya need (e.g. turn the damn uac off)

probably bad video memory, nothing to do but RMA it.

Coolermaster eXtreme Power 460. There is no P10 connector on the graphics card.
