Okay, so I changed over to Virgin yesterday got both laptops up and running fine. This morning I turned the main one on and it would not connect to internet, tryed upstairs one no probs. Tryed to connect wired downstairs still no internet. Have been on the phone most of the day to virgin and they said they can no longer help me its a laptop problem something to do with the IP address not doing what it should (although it was working yesterday) Its set to do the IP thing automatically I have tryed everything I can think of and the laptop it a month out of warranty so im gonna be pissed if I cant fix it. Was thinking of wiping everything and completely starting again but that is a last resort, can anyone please, please help me???

What model of laptop have you got? and it maybe easier to see if there was a update on the wireless network interface it has in the laptop...but there are few things you can do within Windows before you begin..Its good that you are on DHCP mode..>Which means obtain IP Address automatically.

First, Are you able to scan for wireless networks?
#2
lol sounds like my mum the otherday same with sky

reset you router and pc then scan for wireless networks

what u get?
#3
its a compac a935em, show networks available when i click on the one I want it says local only and then Internet explorer cannot ........
#4
I am pretty sure virgin staff asked you to reboot the router...could you please do that again but only have one (problem) laptop connected

Also is the router provided by Virgin? Belkin perhaps...If so it would definately need to be powered off and on...I have noticed this problem with Virgin quite alot..you need to constantly bounce the router...every other day..or change the router to a stable one.
#5
yes have rebooted it serval times already but will do it again
#6
where do you leave so that i can stay outside the window. lol
#7
try right click and disconnect from network after reset router

then right click icon n reconnect

Im also a Virgin Media customer and this happens to me from time to time, heres what works for me.

When they say unplug your router , dont just turn the plug off on the wall, this never works for me

Actually remove the plug from the wall socket fo 3-4 minutes then plug back in turn on and restart PC

This always works for me and we are using one PC on ethernet and 2 wireless ones

Hope this helps

also worth checking the router console if its set to automatically connect timeout = -1
as I dont know which make of the router you have hard to let you know what the IP address of the router is.

but do this. When connected (as you get local connection)
click Start>run>cmd> type Ipconfig this should give you default gateway that will be your router address
copy and paste that in a browser and you will be asked for username and password.

Try clicking ok..if you dont know the details or

username: admin
password: password

and check interect access setup area...it should be set to automatically connect

Thats what the generic problem with virgin routers....You are right. you need to totally power it down by removing the plug

Go to Control Panel > Network & Sharing Centre > Manage Network Connections then right click on your LAN connection and go to properties, double click TCP/IP IPv4 and you'll see there you can specify IP addresses, DNS servers etc.

if you cant get sorted try static ip for a while ......happened to my mum then it was ok after a while
#14
whats a static ip? still cant get on im really stressing now

default gateway is blank?

and check interect access setup area...it should be set to automatically connect
#16
your gateway should be the address of your router....
#17

your gateway should be the address of your router....

its blank
#18
try putting in the routers address
#19
go upstairs and start - run - cmd - to open a dos window then ipconfig note the gateway address and come back
and i will tell you the address to put in for static
#20
im lost
#21
add me to msn I will fix this for you
check pm in 30secs
#22
Try 192.168.1.254, it's often the good one. enter it into the gateway you should be able to access your roter if you type that number into your browser

ok msn the lad above probably easier
#23
192.168.1.1 for wireless network connections, LAN doesnt have a gateway address on upstairs laptop
#24
it must have a gateway or its not on the net
#25
this sorted yet?
#26
