it would help if you'd said what laptop it was and what operating system you have on it

Assuming you have one of the later operating systems such as Windows 7 or Vista, then simply turn the laptop off if you cant then hold the power button in for 5 seconds and it will

restart it, while its starting press the F8 button continiously till you get a menu on screen
if it gets to the bit that says "windows is starting" then you've gone too far

you now have 2 choices, try this one first
Choose system recovery (should be the first option)
then it should ask you for a username/passowrd
then on the next window you want to choose system restore and pick a date you know the computer was working fine.

IF for some reason you cant get into that ie you dont know the name/password then try this
start in safe mode
then go to programs, accessories, system tools, system restore
choose that and tell it to restore to a date when you know it was definately working

this will (should) work for XP as well

So what do I do? to make sure its all okay?
#9
its vista, pressing f8 doesnt do anything
#10
It must have a name?

Anyway, if you have a USB stick, download either MalwareBytes or SuperAntiSpyware. Install it on the infected system and let it do a full scan, hopefully it will find the files and delete them.
#11
as above F8 then choose Safe Mode

Once in

Start - Programs - Accessories - System tools - system restore

choose a restore date.

End of.
#12
Sorry f8 has come up

you cant have re-booted that quickly!

READ THE POST I PUT PROPERLY

PRESS F8 FAST LOADS OF TIMES WHILE ITS STARTING TILL YOU GET THE MENU UP

IF YOU MISS IT AND GET THE "WINDOWS IS STARTING" YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR

RESTART IT AND DO IT AGAIN

YOU WILL EVENTUALLY GET IT RIGHT AND GET THE MENU
#15
IE dont try it while the laptop is on, that wont do a thing., turn the thing off first like I said in my first post
#16
yep got the menu xx

While malware bites "MAY" work
if its affected a file thats part of the operating system, then it will not get rid of it while it is running.
It is also very slow and would take hours to find out it might not work

the quickest way is to do the system restore to before it was infected, then do the scans and remove all traces that may be on the laptop

The best way to remove it is to start the laptop with a specialist bood disk with antiviral and antimalware software on it, that will clean the laptop quickest and best as windows will not be running at all

The best thing for the laptop is put a DECENT antivirus on it, that has antivirus, anti malware, firewall and other features all in one and keep it updated - if nothing gets onto the laptop then it doesn't need fixing
By decent i do NOT mean norton, thats a pile of shyte

"boot" not bood ^

I had this and the only way I could get rid of it was using a Linux anti-virus boot disk. It had totally taken over Windows so it wouldn't let me run any scans, even in Safe Mode!

This will be helpful if you want to take that route: http://www.techmixer.com/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/

This also happened to my brother at a later date and the Linux boot disk couldn't get rid of it. Spent many hours trying but just had to reformat in the end.

What a load of rubbish

Full scan takes about an hour on my 600gb drive and about 6 minutes on Quick Scan.

The location of these types of files get picked up on Quick Scan, but as the Laptop obviously hasnt been scanned before a Full Scan is better.

Do you have a second PC and a USB stick or dvd / cdrom you can copy too?

Download Malware Bytes and transfer it to one, then stick it in the laptop and install.

Someone who suggests a format due to a small infection is an IDIOT, suspend me if you wish, but if someone is asking for help, and they actually did a format without realising what they did they would be in a big mess right now in terms of data loss.

My post was 6 or 7 lines, and the point you are trying to tell me was 1 word.

You're pathetic.
