Ok guys - need your help here please! Next thurs my son's school are having a dress down day but it has a theme! They need to dress up as either:

Either a character from a book by a foreign author OR
A character where the story has been set in a another country OR
Where the story has a cultural theme OR
dress up as an author who writes stories from other cultures/countries

Any ideas need to be quite obvious and not too obscure! Also I don't want to have to spend any money (altho am aware I may have to spend something so as little as poss!!)

He's 8 nearly 9 years old and hates fancy dress so nothing garish!!!

Many thanks for all ideas!!!!

It was my son's dress down day last thursday for world book day. It was a round the world theme.
At 1st I was going to send him as Jack Sparrow from Pirates of The Caribbean but he didnt want to wear that so he went in his karate suit. Tho his school isnt that strict saw lots of other children in alsorts of outfits. My friends children went as spiderman and a witch. Hope that helps :)

Draw a big target on his forehead and tell them he's Salman Rushdie :D

Send him in his dressing gown with a tea towel on his head and say he's someone out of that Bible book - I think that was set somewhere foreign

Hmmm what a way to make poor kids or their parents feel left out if they cant afford a proper costume

I remember my brother back in the very early 90's getting a blue jumper and blue trousers and making a homemade hat and sash to pretend he was a Thunderbird though don't think that would be popular these days or that relevant.
