Sony Experia Play or HTC Desire S?

As above. Going to take out a new contract this week and I am undecided on what phone to get.

Both will cost roughly the same, so I am tempted to get the Sony as it has the higher value and can then trade for the HTC.

Currently got a Desire but quite fancy a wee change, while sticking with android. Anyone used the Sony?

Cheers

If you fancy a change I'd probably recommend the Play. I'd take the play just so I could play Pro Skater 2 on it, and the hardware buttons and bigger screen are more attractive to me. I have a feeling the Play will keep it's value for longer than the Desire S also, with most people either going for the Incredible S or being sucked in by dual core phones, and thus the Desire only being in the market for about 6 months.

Is Pro Skater 2 one of the pre loaded games? I'm looking forward to playing Crash Bandicoot :) Had a wee look at the phone today and it's as big as my Desire, but about 1.5 times as thick. The slider felt quite sturdy, but don't know how long it would last with constant moving? I will most likely get the Play, while keeping my desire as a back up :)

I was gonna say, exactly that the play phone is pretty chunky and also alot heavier. Other then that they are pretty equal from the looks of it, besides the game package that play includes.

It's not, but with one of the PSX emulators available it is, and it'd play great with the gamepad!
Nice to see SE really going for this, good potential in the software, even if the hardware was originally a bit disappointing for a games oriented phone.
Think it might be time to go back to Android, in the past 2 years I've gone from iOS to Android, back to iOS, then Android with my Desire, at the moment I'm using a Windows Phone 7 device which I love in combination to an old iPhone 2G and iPod Touch that I enjoy fiddling about with, but if I can pick up another cheap Desire I think I could see myself sticking with that :)

It didn't feel that much heavier. Was about as heavy as a 3GS. It would be a deal breaker if there was a better game package with the phone. Something similar to the PSP GO or Galaxy Tab, where you were given a budget to buy what you wanted.

Adding to what I've said, if the XDA folk pick up a few Play's I can see it becoming a really awesome device, although deep down I have a feeling that the Desire S will get more followers

I've never been really able to enjoy gaming on a mobile phone, but maybe play might have things cut out that'll make it stand out, so yeah if you like gaming, I say why not especially since you shall still have your desire. I haven't checked the sony xperia arc but isn't that around the same price too?

Cheers for that fp. A few links to have a look at. Will you be buying one of these?

You're welcome.

If I had the disposable income last week I would already have bought one.

Fortunately, with the delays due to stock (via Vodafone) &/or issues with testing (via O2) it has given me a few more weeks.

There are some that may not be bothering now that the "NGP" (Next Generation Portable) has been announced, but since my iPhone went scuba diving in a toilet bowl (don't ask!) last November I have missed having access to the World Wide Wait whilst away from a PC.

I'm looking forward to owning both devices.

just a note of caution, engadget recon that the screen on the play is terrible, you cant see it in sunlight, and they even struggled using it on a bus in the shade, so not so good for playing when out and about

"Taking the phone out for an afternoon outside, we couldn't play Crash Bandicoot even on the bus, never mind out in the direct glare of the sun. It's not an unqualified disaster, as viewing angles are pretty wide, the 854 x 480 resolution is decent, and under the right circumstances you can obtain some pleasantly vibrant images from it, but it's still one the worst screens we've seen on a review phone -- hell, review hardware of any kind."

Don't trust the Engadget review, take a gander down to the comments at the bottom of the page for more than enough reasons why you shouldn't trust them at the moment.

Every other review site is listing the Play's screen as a positive

Well after some reading up last night I decided to go ahead and get the Play. It seems it has a few issues, but the pros far outweigh the cons.

Have you managed to get any emulators up and running yet DJ?

nah no emulations yet but I do fancy gt2 on the play

Is that because it's not yet possible? Or have you just not tried the emulators?

Picking my Play up tomorrow :) Anyone got any tips or tricks to get the most from it? Looking to get emulators running on it. Anyone got FF7 running on one? Cheers.

The Play is going to be an utter failure so I really wouldn't advise getting it.

It just won't sell enough to make it a sustainable platform. The phone itself is unspectacular in terms of specs and there's no real demand for it. It's a phone that had a shot 4 years ago, but the market has moved on.

Downloaded all the tiger emulators and psxdroid v2. Playing my old favourites using an excellent gamepad. Loving my Sony Xperia Play so far :)
