Sony PS3 80GB announcement

Sony may have disappointed European PlayStation 3 fans by failing to announce a European launch date for the new, cheaper 80GB PS3 earlier this week, but it's realised its mistake and confirmed that the model will arrive here next month.

David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), said that the new 80GB PS3 will land in Europe on 27 August. He added that the console will cost £299 in the UK and 399 in the Euro zone.

Interestingly, the Euro price works out at £316, so for once Brits are getting the better deal. It's all down to the fluctuating exchange rate, which has already ensured Apple no longer needs to prune UK iTunes prices to bring them into line with the rest of Europe.

how much will the price of the 40gb version fall to? what are ur predictions for the 40gb second hand market? im thinking 40gb ps3= £240 new £180= second hand when the 80gb one comes out

They wont drop the price of the 40gb

yeh its so the 80gb is gunna be priced at £299.99 bargain eh..............not

The xbox 360 is now half the price of it

Most expensive console and still no decent games for it
#5
expect a drop in the second hand price of the 40gb as people willl upgrade to the 8-gb but the new price will probably stay about the same

and dandoc yes the xbox is half the price, but its half the console

so what at least it dies with dignity having played decent games

The backwards compatibility wasn't perfect (God of War didn't work irritatingly) however in most cases it's played the games I want without issue.

Is there anything actually new about the 80GB console or is it just a different hard drive?

I didn't think you had a PS3 dandoc2? how would you know...

It's always worked fine on mine, even those titles that aren't supposed to work (jak) seem to work with very few problems...
#14
The new slimline PS2 is almost identical to the old but the power supply is onboard rather than a separate brick.

With regards to the PS3 80GB, given the price point it looks like it's basically just an HD upgrade rather than a new model. However that article is a bit strange in that it mentions the 60GB as if it's still for sale, it was discontinued months ago so the article may be incorrect elsewhere.

It all seems a but strange to me given how easy it is to upgrade the PS3 HDD...

Hows that then?

40GB RRP currently £299

New 80GB RRP will be £299

So basically its just the same console with an extra 40gb FREE

Yeah but no doubt the price for the 80gb will be around £270 if you shop around. Never ad any problems with ps2 games on my 60gb.

This is the reaction to the Microsoft announcement of releasing the 60gb premium 360.

Oh and to the guy who said gta was coming out on the wii, its not, its coming out on the ds.

TBH no-one in the euro region needs a 80gb hard drive as the thing it will be used for (video downloads) isnt coming to europe this year

Don't you mean what the 'half price' 360 has NOT got in its box compared to the ps3. The list is very long ;-)

Dandoc has forgotten this is a thread discussing the PS3 not the Xbox, wish he'd keep his trolling to himself.

A small HD upgrade is fair enough I guess to try and tempt a few more people to the machine, the stripped down 40GB model seems to have been successful and has set the direction for the PS3. I guess most people interested in BC have probably already picked up a 60GB model anyway.

Whilst we're on the subject of console bashing can I just say that I hate with an absolute passion that ridiculous National Express Coach sized brick of a power supply that comes with the 360...

Why so big? Who on the MS design team was told 'well done... can you make it BIGGER?'

Yeh its like you have to have it on display and not shoved out of sight, unlike the ps3. Sony must have thought that they could do one better than the original xbox and make their console bigger and uglier. And they did.

Well your avatar says it all. :whistling:

Personally i like the look of the ps3 but i must admit it doesnt have the most pwnzorz feature of being able to make the first 1cm wood effect/chrome/ halo
#35
Trying to get back on topic...

From reading various articles it looks like the 80GB is going to replace the 40GB so no new features, just more hard drive for your money which people can't really complain about. It's more of an issue in the states where they currently have a 40GB and 80GB PS3 model but the latter still has backwards compatibility, both these versions are going to be phased out with the new 80GB PS3 with no BC replacing the 40GB PS3 as with EU but that will be it - no BC in the US either.

Not clear if the new 80GB version will be shipped with DS3 controller as standard. Just seen the Choices 40GB customer returns back in stock at £199 so tempted to go for that. Maybe people returned their consoles on hearing about the 80GB release! I could always upgrade the HD if necessary and still save on the RRP price.

I read somewhere that it included the ds3 controller.

I was thinking that this morning... Sony won't be cutting the price of the 40gb as they expect stocks of it to expire around the time of the launch of the 80gb. You wouldn't buy a 40gb with the imminent release of an 80gb for the same cash would you? Anyone in a hurry to purchase a PS3 would almost certainly have done so by now, what's an extra couple of months for double the storage...

So what happens to the existing stocks of 40gb?

Didn't sony slate MS for releasing different versions of the same console?

You could buy a cheap 320GB drive and a DS3 mostly with the money you've saved and be better off with more HD space and two controllers.

Yep that's what I decided to do, although I'll hold off uprgrading the Hard disc until necessary. 40GB should be more than enough for a few months at least.

Just hope Choices do get some stock as my order has been confirmed, but nothing is guaranteed until they have the goods ready to dispatch.
