Driverless trains can't come soon enough.
They'd still need someone somewhere to control them and if they went on strike, the whole rail system would likely come to a standstill.

In any case, can you realistically see any government being prepared to finance the massive technological improvements needed to the rail infrastructure to run driverless trains?

When I was a child, I wanted to drive a train when I grew up. It seems that being a child is actually a requirement to be a train driver.

DLR is also on strike, drivers have complained that they are entirely unnecessary and furthermore invisible.
(Service runs at over 99% efficiency and timeliness.)
