Speaker Setup - Help Needed!

Hi all. I am having some problems setting up my 5.1 speaker system to play with iTunes. I have made a thread on avforum's but I havn't been able to fix it yet so I thought I would try here instead. I will write here and put the images and links in the post below.

I purchased a 5.1 logitech speaker system, but only 2 satellites and the sub seem to work. Even when I go into audio settings, and select a 5.1 setup, the same satelites and sub work and the 3 other satalites emit a really fuzzy and quiet version of whatevers playing (or maybe no sound at all, my ears could be playing tricks on me... it's very faint).

All the jacks are plugged into their corresponding colour coded places in the sub base unit and into the pc respectivly. If I go onto configuration of the speakers and "test" them (image below) then it "plays" each speaker and sound does come out of each one perfectly, when it is supposed to - just not when im watching films or (most importantly) when I am listening to music.

Extra details: I use a 64x W7 operating system, watch movies using Windows Media Player (usually I use .avi or .mkv files, but sometimes just run DVD's) and play music using iTunes.

Are you playing from a 5.1 source?

Sorry - could you clarify what you mean? Do you mean the type of files I am playing/what I am using to play them with (i.e. software/hardware)?

Are you playing a 5.1 dvd for example?
I.e if I had my surround system setup of 5.1 but was only playing a stereo source, so 2.0 then I would only heard music from the front left and front right.

Hm, it appears you are right - when I play a 5.1 DVD (just checked with war of the worlds) then it works. I take it then that my downloaded films (.avi/.mkv) and my music (.mp3 generally) are "2.0 sources" - is there no way to simulate a 5.1 output with a stereo source?

My friend uses an amp and his sound sounds great, I was hoping I wouldnt have to use one to play music from all my 6 speakers!

I don't know if there's any app for video, but for music you can use Foobar (free app) to play your stereo music as 5.1 audio. There's a plugin you need for it (can't remember the name, not used Foobar for ages).
EDIT: Quick Google came up with this which sounds about right:

Problem sorted, or rather no problem as such. Thought it might be that!

You can 'upmix' so that sound will come out of all speakers...I know I had the X-530s when they first were released!
On your audio control panel see if there is an option for 'Stereo Surround' or 'Speaker Fill' that will upmix stereo to surround ;-)

It comes under 'Enhancements'.

I clicked "speaker fill" and when I applied the music playing got louder, but still nothing coming from the other 3 speakers!

Any idea how to use this mate? I downloaded it and dropped it in my iTunes folder, but no idea what to do with it now! If I google foobar is turns out its an audio player (not a plugin) as well - if I can make the plugin work that would be ideal though, because I have all my ratings/play counts etc on iTunes already!

EDIT: used itunes help and put it into the correct folder installing it apparently, but still not sure how to use it!
rep left btw guys

Sorry I wasn't clear:
Foobar - audio player application
Channel Mixer - plugin for Foobar that allows upmixing i.e. playing your 2.1 audio as 5.1

It won't work on iTunes unfortunately. You'll have to use Foobar as your audio player instead of iTunes

Ah I see. I'll give it a go and keep my eyes peeled for an iTunes method too! Thanks!
