Make sure they are plugged in the correct hole in the back of your PC (usually the green output). If that doesnt work check in device manager that the sound card is working correctly and has the correct drivers installed.

I have had an instance recently that on re-setup windows installed a completely different set of drivers for the systems soundcard. So although windows was reporting everything was working ok it in fact was not outputting any sound. Cross that bridge if it gets to that stage (Everest to find out hardware, download correct drivers, reinstall). ;-)

PS also check in your sounds volume mixer option that the volume is turned up (just in case lol) !

At a guess, you haven't got the sound drivers installed.

You can normally find and download them by going to

http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=GuidedPathHomePage

I'd have a look at your device manager to see if there are any exclamation marks, that should give some indication of any driver issues. Not sure what version of Windows you have but you should be able to access your device manager by right clicking My Computer and selecting Properties and then Device Manager. Report back with any problems.

This is correct. Dell never provide proper driver disks.

It won't be speakers in the device manager it will be the sound card you need to look for

Are there any exclamation marks in there?

Can you provide the Dell model number and I'm sure someone will be able to help regarding sound cards for the specific one you have.

On basis that with computers no suggestions that are logical are stupid:

click on speaker icon in task bar...ensure volume sliders are all set to top?
#11
Even though you may have done it already, set an mp3 playing, then methodically, test speaker plug in each possible output socket at the back of the PC
#12
Try running Windows Update. Select the "Custom" option then look under both "Software, Optional" and "Hardware, Optional" for anything related to audio devices.

I don't know how to run a Windows update:oops:

It's almost certainly a driver issue. With Vista and Win 7 Windows Update will usually find the drivers automatically (if the box in the Windows Update is set to update other products) But i see you're running XP.

You need to install the drivers that are in csiman's post

Thank you for taking the time to help me csiman that's fixed it:thumbsup:
