See my email to their customer services today. One bad day!

After doing some research on the net looks like this company is bad from top to bottom.

Check this out and their marketing tactics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_Direct.

Never been to their shops before and will never go again.

Dear Sirs

I wish to make a formal complain about your store manger, xxxx, at your Ilford store.

I went to my local Sainsbury's, where I do my shopping, which is situated next to your store, Sports Direct, on Saturday (28/06/2008). Just before going into Sainsbury to do my usual weekly shopping I thought of popping to Sports Direct which I believe has been open since the local JJB store closed about few months ago. I have never been to any of your stores, anywhere in UK, before in my life.

Upon arrival at your store, I think it was about 5.56pm, I looked at some trainers and then proceeded to the football replica kits section to check the prices with no intention of buying any items from your store. I was wearing an Arsenal replica kit myself. While I as looking at some of the football replica kits I noticed some Dunlop shirts and bottoms were on sale for £4 and £8.99 respectively. I took two Dunlop "golf" shirts and one Dunlop bottom. While I was looking for my shirt size, small, I noticed a Nike top was in with these Dunlop shirts at a price of £6. The size was large but I picked it up as it was cheap and I thought of giving it as a present to someone.

When I went to the check out the checkout assistant said the total was £41.98. Surprised at the total I asked why was it so high and she said that the Nike shirt scanned at £24.99. I showed her the tag which had a price of £6. Checkout assistant called the manager and he said the tag was put in there and the the price is actually £24.99. I said I didn't want the Nike item and paid for the other 3 items and walked to the exit. At the exit point the store manager, xxxx, waited for me, showed me the £6 tag that was on the Nike item and said " don't do it again and if you do it aging I will have done and thrown out of the store for good". I said "what"?. He said "you heard". I asked him " are you accusing me of putting that tag on to that item". He said "yes". I asked him if has got any proof. He said don't get defensive. I said its not being defensive its a matter of principle for me as I do not want someone to accuse me of doing something that I would never do. I told xxxx that if he doesn't apologies I will return the items I bought. He said I can't as I have bought it and there is no returns policy. When I walked out I told him that I earn 5 time his salary and no need for me to do such thing.

I have been on your website and it says that if I am not satisfied with the purchase and if the item is in the same condition as it was when it was purchased you will give a full refund.

I don't expect you to take any disciplinary action against xxxx as I know you wouldn't. I do believe he made an error of judgement. I cannot take legal action, even though I would like to, as this would be a case of my words against xxxxl's words. I did ask xxxx to put it in writing but he refused to do it as I guess he knew the legal implications of such allegation. But I do intend to speak to my legal representative about this on Monday.

Finally, I would like to return my items and get a full refund as I am totally disappointed with xxxx's comments and do not wish to either visit or buy items from your store. Its one very bad experience I never want to go through again. I have never been accused of such a ridicules thing in my life.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Wow, that's a pretty strong accusation.

the website returns are different to the store ones, i think all internet orders have to allow for returns under the distant selling act, stores do not follow the same returns policy
#3
I shop at their main depot and distribution hub (it has over 50 lorry bays) and they have a store there where I have always received good service and been treated politely by the staff and they have always been helpful, I think you are basing your opinion of the store on the basis of one manager who seems to have an attitude problem.

Have you sent the email yet? If not i'd remove the following part at least

It just comes across childish as you have no way of knowing what his salary is, and seems more like a playground tantrum than part of a complaint you expect to have taken seriously.

Yup that is correct, i think store only offers credit notes which they are legally allow to do so. I think by law you are ONLY allowed a refund if " goods are not fit for the purpose they are intended"

You can take things back to Sports World - i know that for a fact. You may only get a credit voucher rather than cash back, but you can definatly return items for any reason if with 28 days of purchase.

Hmmm. I'd hardly say that his accusation was nothing! I don't blame him one bit for getting the hump.

lifestyle sports tried the same trick on me, they had managed to price a pair of shorts at 0.00 instead of 20 and said i had done it.

But i had the last laugh because they had done it on 2 more pairs of shorts

Pretty harsh by him.

But.. a proof read wouldn't have gone a miss, this sounds like something my sister would say "he said, she said, i said she said this that and the other"

Defamation is pretty difficult (nigh on impossible) to prove in court.
If you wanted to pursue this you would need to find a false allegation case or a defamation case.

Email is gone. I ccd it to Mike Ashley and Michael Oliver. I also happen to know one of their board members as I used to work for the firm that audited their accounts.

Yep, it wasn't warranted for. But it was hot stuff and it was a hot day too.

Came home told my other half, she asked me to take it back tomorrow and tell him to stick his refund and the items up where the sun don't shine. I will sleep on it.

What has this got to do with anything? This and the fact that you said you earn x5 times his salary smacks of arrogance which is not helpful to your situation.

You were wrongly accused and quite rightly decided to complain. However, your response is verbose and contains far to much irrelevant information. Anyone reading it would have given up at the first paragraph. If the facts of a complaint cannot be put on ONE page, it won't get very far.

Clearly you are very upset, as most would be. However, I feel you may have made things much worse by naming the store and the manager on a public forum. Whilst it is nigh on impossible for an individual to sue for slander (verbal defamation), it would not be prohibitive for this company to sue you for what is now libel (printed).

Personally, I do buy the odd few things from there because there are often bargains. But IMO the stores are badly managed, chaotic and tatty. The staff are poorly paid and their attitude reflects this. I am not at all surprised by what happened to you

If I was arrogant I would have told him,manager, there then "I know your ........................" I didn't.

See my earlier post re salary. Did say it was not clever of me.

Well, I could have walked away from it all, perhaps after sleeping on it, I think I should have done that. As a person who has never been in any "trouble" all my life, it was very hard to take at first. What annoyed me was his tone. I might even send them an email to forget it. The manager has probably got a wife and kids he has to look after.

The funny thing was, I just went for a browse around. The items I bought were is for my gym use only. Never ever been to any of their stores not even for a browse around before.

Well next time when I change the tag I will make sure I change the barcode too!!

Personally, I would write / email the company. They need to know how the manager treated you. Just don't expect any form of sensible reply and you won't be disappointed.

That probably sums it up quite nicely! And if that does happen, the OP is quite entitled to believe that the company condone this sort of thing and is normal practice for its management.

Thanks for your support and advice everyone.

I am not the sort to of bloke who complains about things normally. I Just wanted people to be aware of it. Last time I made a formal complaint was about bloody poll tax, council calculating my tax incorrectly.

I guess bad/rude behaviour is normal now days. Its good I spend most of my time at work. I let my missus do the shopping. Some days she comes home and complains about service at certain shops/stores. Now I know what she means.

If were you matey... I would stand outside the store in my spare time and simply tell each and every person walking in there not to.... due to the level of service:x
