Sounds very generous.
Starbucks has pledged to hire 10,000 refugees globally over the next five years, in response to US President Donald Trump's recent immigration ban.

On Friday, President Trump signed an executive order barring immigrants from seven majority-Muslim countries for a minimum of 90 days, and suspending the US refugee program for 120 days.
Mr Schultz said he wrote to employees with "deep concern, a heavy heart and a resolute promise" - adding he wanted them to know that the firm would "neither stand by, nor stand silent, as the uncertainty around the new administration's actions grows with each passing day".

Because they want publicity, they have zero interest in altruism.

Nice free PR

I take it they will do this without prejudicing against those who are not immigrants

Sept 2015 http://time.com/4046768/starbucks-worker-conditions/
.
a fair report, a bit of quote,
"I’m so happy that Starbucks heard me, but I’m just one person. Unfortunately many Starbucks workers don’t speak up and voice their struggles.

My co-workers silently work "clopen" shifts, where they shut down the store at night and come back the next morning to open it. They silently deal with inconsistent work schedules. They silently cope with not knowing how much work they’re going to get each week, making it impossible for them to budget—and budgeting is already hard on $8.25 an hour."
.
American born don't accept these wages and conditions, IN n Out Burgers get ~US$12, depending on State, and far better working conditons.

But if they are refugees they do not have any legal right to work until they gain the right to remain in a county then they are not refugees anymore.

So starbucks is pledging to employ 10,000 illegal workers probably for far below minimum wage :{

It is about labour cost reduction to the business on the use of recent immigrants with provisonal status. It is the interaction of legal requirement to pay penalties or pay health insurance new laws and their exclusion from new provisonal immigrants. Those who gain provisional legal status under Obama’s immigration plan are not eligible for health care subsidies. So savings per head is in the order of thousands of dollars.

You will find that in the US situation, they are talking about legal immigrants who have provisional status.

Ain't you happy they are employing 10,000 refugees. They will take them out of poverty at least. Then people like you lot moan that the refugees are claiming welfare, free housing, raping our women, Markel has blood on her hands and so on. If they are offered a job with a huge company then let it be so.
Why has tax suddenly bothered you?
The govermment isn't bothered about it, neither with AMAZON and the rest.

I doubt a zero hours job with Starbucks is going to take anyone out of the benefit system . They will have to be dragged kicking and screaming to take a job like that and lose and benefits , housing benefit , etc etc

the car wash places are useful, they make life easier for immigration officers doing raids.

They won't take on 10,000 and will all be dumped once their novelty value wears thin

I've never seen so many people washing one car, if that's what you mean? All claiming some sort of "in work benefits" i would imagine. (_;)

immigration have caught quite a few round Lancashire and Yorkshire. no free car wash, I believe they take the money before they start (not 100% though)

Would be better for local communities if they offered to employ a homeless person from the area of their shop, the increasing rate of people sleeping rough in the UK and possibly globally is terrible. Real help to the local communities they are based in would be better than a quick PR exercise off the back of a temporary USA immigration policy.
starbucks only announced this because of trumps immigrant policy. The homeless in this country is nothing compared to mass refugees.
If everyone in this country paid 5p each towards each homeless in this country then they won't be in that state anymore ! Now that's a lot of money

they are very hard working and exploited. they need to get paid the same as British people instead of undercutting our workers.

Somehow I doubt it...people love their coffees far more than they care about who serves or prepares them.

And long may it continue 8)

For the price they charge for a coffee they can do one!Sooner have a pint!Whoever they employ!

All coffee shops are stupid unless they are those proper little Italian places people go to as a treat every once in a while, i don't understand all these people who go rushing to spend £2+ everyday on a plastic cup of milky cat poo or whatever and then do the same thing again at lunch break every day.

Probably the same people who eat those breakfast cereal bars in the morning or rush thru red lights on a bike in the morning because they don't want to be late, never occurs to any of em to get up earlier.

this is the same **** company that refused to supply coffee to the troops in Iraq and were promptly kicked off every mod base as a result. I have never been in a Starbucks ever since.
