SteamOS and Steam Machine HUKD Official Thread

Thought I would make a 'proper' misc thread for all things SteamOS related (including the Beta)...

I have been using the Beta on the Medion P7610 dual core laptop since the Beta was released and it is rough around the edges in its Beta state but the future of gaming looks safe and it's about time gaming on linux took off!

So, who is using this or has had a play with it?
What do you think of it?
Any useful info or tricks and tips to share with the rest of HUKD?

Feel free to discuss all things SteamOS and Steam Machine related...

Here's an up-to-date list of the free games on SteamOS currently...

Toribash
8BitMMO
Champions Of Regnum
Cannons Laser Rockets
Gear Up
Dwarfs F2P
Serena
No More Room In Hell
Free To Play
The Plan
Narcissu 1st & 2nd
Fistful Of Frags
Reversion - The Escape (1st Chapter)
Thinking With Time Machine

Evolution RTS
Floating Point
Sunrider
Conversion
Team Fortress 2

MODS
Synergy (for all HL2 games - makes them CO-OP)
Estranged: Act 1 (requires HL2)
(As of 15th July 2014)

Easiest way to get to the free games in SteamOS is to actually go to any game in your library and go to store page. Then from Store page you can choose either the Free To Play option at the top or the Games option just down from the top and then choose subheading SteamOS / Linux.

SteamOS is free, Windows is not.
SteamOS only runs what it needs for gaming, Windows does not.

Back when Valve were blogging about getting Left For Dead 2 running for Linux/SteamOS they were bragging about the increased frames-per-second when comparing Windows version vs Linux version.
I must say that my own experience so far (SteamOS is still in Beta don't forget) has been that most games take a performance hit when ran on SteamOS compared to Windows. I'm finding Left For Dead 2 worse on SteamOS myself but it may have something to do with SteamOS being in Beta still and/or the graphics drivers (nvidia in my laptop) needing some serious work to get the performance improved.

I'm not pro Windows gaming and I'm not pro SteamOS gaming. I will reserve judgement until SteamOS is final. I just thought I would get in early and check SteamOS out.

Sadly no, I do not have a Steam controller but they do look interesting.

well hopefully it will eventually work out better for gaming. I'm looking forward to the gamepad and just hope its going to be a real alternative to keyboard and mouse.

I use a wireless 360 gamepad for big picture mode. Does SteamOS support such a device?
