Steve jobs can finally kiss my...

I've had an iPhone 2G... The iPhone 3G... Then iPhone 3GS (Reluctant buy).

It is and was an incredible phone, but inbetween the 3G and 3GS i was getting a distinct feeling i was being ripped off. I had sold my iPhone 3G around 2 weeks before WWDC (Before the new iPhone was announced), purposefully to get as much revalue out of it. Really to splash out on whatever materialized.

To be presented with the iPhone 3GS - what i considered contract wise to be a complete and utter rip off in price.. I still do.. Especially considering the hardware inside and what it cost Apple to build. This incredibly high pricing has always been Apple influence, wanting a great deal more cash out of the network providers for each handset sold than other mobile manufactures.

Even the SIM free O2 price is high when looking at the manufacturing / marketing costing on each handset.

I was pissed off, furious.. I bought a 3GS. Reluctantly lining the pockets of Apple.. How dare they.. I love the phone and i don't mind paying a premium for that, but to be ripped off by that margin.. Seemed ludicrous to me, i wasnt happy.. But didnt have any other options which meet the high expectations you have after owning an iPhone.

Finally however.. After waiting.. And waiting... Then being disappointed somewhat with the HTC Hero... I found the answer.

I have a HTC HD2, which after the various xda-developers tweaks and latest 1.61 firmware update... Is absolutely fantastic.. Sure, lack of good apps.. But that's a small issue, when considering the benefits.

Love it so much, that my iPhone 3GS will be whacked on ebay next week :).

So Steve Jobs,

Yours sincerely,

Andrew

You weren't ripped off, you chose to buy it.

+1-glad you enjoyed a good rant tho op-glad you are happy with your new phone too-nobody is forced to buy any gadget-its got zero to do with steve jobs that you bought a series of iphones and then another 2 htcs-thread title is just plain daft. Did someone hold a gun to your head and force you to buy them?

and btw I dont agree the lack of apps isnt an issue-like it or hate it,apple have got the market sewn up now.I love my iphone-worth every penny imho.

You bought the phone. Deal with it.

Your attempt at humour is as poor as your judgment.

There is charging a premium for your product due to demand, then there is purposefully taking advantage of that fact.

The mark up on the iPhone is absolutely insane, not to mention Apple are on the verge of being investigated for price fixing when it comes to Mobile networks. Hence the laws against it...

I mean it's hardly surprising, lets take a look at the sale/trade as an example.. No pricing over retail.. Removes the opportunity for people to buy hot items in bulk, sell when supply is short and pocket a profit.. It's seen as immoral.. It may be seen as capitalism in it’s purest form, echoes of ‘hey if they can sell it for that much, why not go ahead’... Sure..

Doesn’t stop it from being overpriced and doesn’t stop them from being a rip-off.

I love the iPhone, it’s a fantastic device. I just don’t like being taken for a ride price wise either.

good luck with the random crashes, random lockups, the moments it suddenly catches up with itself... dont worry, another .rom will be available within minutes on xda-developers for you to try... then another....

how dare companies mark up their products to make money

its all about image the iphone represents a strong brand image which draws people in so they set their price and they know people will pay it.

its like the loaf of bread thread earlier but lets not get into that :p

Hahaha awesome. Gutted I missed it.

Almost as bad as my local garage charging £2 a litre for fuel when there was a shortage.

OP Couldn't afford to keep iPhone. Had to get a crappy phone instead.

Sad story. Wish I could help.

Well that's the point isn't it...

You could say 'All power to ya, sell that damn iPhone for as much as the people will pay for it'.. But at what point does a company change from hip, fresh and innovative.. To selling such at a ridicules margin and taking advantage of it's customers, that it's simply seen for that..

Particularly with the AppStore.. Where people will have spent a sizable amount of money on applications, who are inadvertently forced to upgrade / purchase at whatever price set or lose those applications. Or at the other end of the scale, be forced to stay on technology a generation behind.

I want to pay a fair price, i want a company i purchase something off to get a fair profit from my purchase. I think it's fine to ask for a premium on a product which warrants it.

I don't however think a profit margin of around 56-60% on an iPhone 3GS is fair to a consumer.

Then again, god love capitalism... An attitude which has gingerly walked us into a deep financial market induced recession... globally...

Because don't ever think that it doesn’t exactly mimic it in that regard, purposefully taking advantage of a buoyant marketplace for your own or companies own personal gain. Beyond the point which is reasonable..

I compare it to the housing market when it was over inflated.

You didn't have to buy that nice house, in the good area with the better transport links and pay a huge price for it.. You could of bought something else, nobody forced you!.. Doesn't stop the house however being completely overpriced, or the banks perpetuating that with large irresponsible lending creating a fragile housing market.

Sure, a mobile phone is hardly going to have such a earth shattering affect as that.. But it’s still the same situation in terms of capitalism, and all these little things no doubt contribute to just create an unfair environment for the consumer. Regardless of personal choice.

But all the above is going into it very in-depth. And if frankly you guys can’t see a 56-60% profit margin and unreasonable and unfair when applied to that, i’m shocked.

Don't know what you've got to moan about. Apparently a corner shop put 30p on the price of a loaf of bread today therefore depriving the old and infirm....... See how lucky you really are?

surely when u think of apple as a whole brand its expensive macs arent cheap but again they are a niche model with nice design etc so they whack up the price, its like sayin wel i bought a mac for £1200 quid but they sold me out they never told me i could make a pc for £800 and it be much faster...

Exactly, we dont buy posh cars for no reason, its all about style and usability. If it was not for Apple we would all still be using NK500's with Express on Covers!!!
